Default I'm deaf!

My sound was acting goofy, so I thought I'd remove the driver and then
reinstall it. Well, I removed it, but now it appears the driver itself was
removed from my system!

There's still a "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" listed with a BIG yellow
question mark in my Device Administrator, but I can't find the driver.

When you answer, be sure to speak up :-)

Hi crpedro (Bellowing at the top of my voice) :-)

In SAFE MODE, Go to your yellow ?, remove PCI device AND any other
occurrences of PCI Multimedia Device, shut down and reboot in normal mode.
Windows should reinstall drivers etc.

Then, if necessary, go to the manufacturer's website and install the latest
driver(s) for your audio device.

Best of luck

foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Thanks, Delboy. The driver I'm looking for is the standard (if there is such
a thing) Windows driver that comes with Windows Me for the speakers! I'm
going through all the directories with ANY *.inf files in them to see if the
installation program likes ANYTHING.

Does anyone know the name of the driver? I would assume that it
would/should be in the Windows installation CD, and knowing the name would
certainly cut down on my search time.

Thanks!!

There is no "standard" driver since these is no standard audio chip. Did
you follow Delboy's advice? If not why not? If yes, with what effect?
Is the audio chip yellow banged in the Device Manager? You will find it
in the section "sound, video and game controllers".

I would assume that it would/should be in the Windows installation CD

Not necessarily. It rather depends on the audio chip on your motherboard
or add-on card. It is quite possible that you will need to download and
install the latest Win me compatible driver from the manufacturer's web
site.

I followed Delboy's advice. On restart it says it found new hardware and
can't find the driver.

Before following Delboy's advice the driver in the "sound, video and game
controllers" section had a nice big yellow question mark and said that the
driver needed to be reinstalled.

I have the Windows Me installation CD, but nothing for any other drivers.

Where do I look to find out what audio chip I have?

Thanks.

It really would have helped if you had included that detail in your
previous post. All you need do now then is download and install the
necessary audio driver for your sound card/chip.

The best free tool for checking what hardware you have installed has just
been withdrawn (Everest Home from Lavalys) so the best that I can advise
is that you download and run the Belarc Adviser from
(http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) and see if this can identify
your hardware. If that fails, download and install the free AIDA32 from
Aumha (http://www.aumha.org/freeware/freeware.htm specifically
http://www.aumha.org/downloads/aida32.zip). This is the predecessor of
Everest and may also help you.

Both of those sites are now "illegal" as Lavalys have made it clear they
do not want Everest Home 2.20 to be distributed anymore HOWEVER I would
certainly recommend that the OP uses one or other and grabs themselves a
copy before it is removed.

I still use the earlier version 1 as I understood the new one didn't give
as much information. I also have a copy of Aida32 and Belarc g
Joan
