cpu roar
After having my computer shut down for 2 days while I was out of
town there is a loud roar coming from the cpu. What should I look at first to track this down? I'm afraid something is about to crash, so I backed up some important data files already, but this noise is driving me crazy. Dell Dimension L733r, WinME, 80 g WD hard drive (replaced original hd 2 yrs ago). Thanks, Janice |

Sounds like (pun unintended!) your CPU fan is on its way out.
It may just be clogged with dust-bunnies - so open the case and check that first. If its relatively clear, then you either need to tackle replacing the fan yourself, or get a techie to do it for you. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "granjan" wrote in message ... Janice,
CPUs contain no moving parts and are silent so the more likely cause of your noise problems is a failing fan. Most PCs have a fan attached to the cpu and another in the power supply and perhaps a case fan. More powerful modern PCs might also have fans attached to their graphics card and to the north bridge chip on the motherboard. It is also possible the noise is due to a failing disk. The first thing I would check would be the cpu fan - look for dust and/or fur balls that might be obstructing air flow or even the actual fan itself. With the case open you could try running the PC and try and localise the origin of the noise. Knowing what is noisy will then help you work out the best solution to the problem. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP granjan wrote: After having my computer shut down for 2 days while I was out of town there is a loud roar coming from the cpu. Thanks Mike and Noel for your replies. I have been trying
different things to find out what is causing the roar and I have come to the conclusion that my hard drive is about to die. The fan seems to be fine...I blew some dust out of it but the noise seems to be coming from the front of the case where the hard disk is located. Since I have had other problems lately such as cd-rom drive not being recognized sometimes, not being able to complete a scandisk even in dos and other things I can't think of right now, I am really expecting something to just die any time now. I have backup so I'm okay there, but I have decided to just use it til it dies and get a new computer when that happens. Thanks for your help. Good Luck - but buying a new HD is a LOT cheaper than buying a new PC!!

Have you tried setting the HD spin down in the power save settings to three minutes then wait and see if the sound dies when the drive spins down? - Bill |

And installing a second HD, as the slave, copying the original OS drive to
it, using the included utility, and recabling and rejumpering the new drive to be the bootable drive, is a very simple fix compared to the alternatives. Eg., one of the big box retailers in my area offers a Wester Digital ATA100, 7200 rpm, 2 MB cache HD for $US 19.99, after rebates this week! This is a pretty inexpensive fix, IMO. -- Jack E. Thanks, Janice If you are in Britain, Maplins do CPU fans, I had to replace both the CPU fan and the PSU fan, both had failed bearings. Regards Mike. |

my com was sounding like a jet plane taking off and it was smelling like
something burning also. so I went to best buy and told the helper I needed a fan and when I told him I smelled something burning he said no no I think it's the power supply. well he was right I changed my power supply upgraded from 250 to 305 and also upgraded my ram from 512 to 1024 and now no noise. good luck ps also could be dusty too along with that -- attilathehun1 "Noel Paton" wrote: Sounds like (pun unintended!) your CPU fan is on its way out.
