Fail to start up

I have bought a DxLL desktop recently. Since some of the application software
can only run under Windows ME platform, and i tried to install the WinME to
my new PC.

I can actually install the windows but when the installation is completed,
it just halt on the first reboot. Just goes to the black screen after
selecting the booting devices. And i found that the files in C drive (the
drive i install the windows ME) are crashed. I have to format the C drive
before i can reuse it.

Finally i call up Dxll for support and they said their PC is for WinXP, they
cannot answer questions related to WINME.

I just wonder if that nowadays the new PC already not compatable with
windows ME?

"Crashed"? Do you mean 'corrupted' or 'damaged' files?

If so, you appear to have a failing hard drive. Did you run scandisk?
(preferably in Real Mode DOS using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk)

.... I have to format the C drive
before i can reuse it.

Didn't formatting indicate potentially faulty or 'bad' sectors?

If the HDD is OK, try booting into Safe Mode (rather than Normal Mode) to
see if the PC will boot beyond the 'halt', then try to locate 'conflicts' in
Device Manager.

Should work, unless you've got some newer (post WinMe) hardware connected
(throw it off whilst your trying to install WinMe) and then look for WinMe
compatible drivers before (re) installing these items.

If the system uses a SATA (Serial ATA) connection for its hard drive
rather than the older PATA (Parallel ATA) then this is a possible reason
for your seeing problems as Win Me contains no SATA drivers. I *think"
that Win Me should drop back to using DOS-compatibility mode to access the
drive but this would have a performance hit.

may have been correct - by a pure fluke g I've never worked with SATA at
all - let alone in connection with WinMe. But like I've always said about
the WinMe NGs, you can always learn something new.here.

I've never tried installing Win Me on a system using SATA drives but
thought I would add to your post an example of what I thought might be a
possible cause of the problem since many/most modern systems now use SATA
drives. I'm trying to work out how I could test this for myself but it
won't be easy. I'd be happy to use my laptop but that is PATA and this
box is old enough to have a PATA drive as its boot drive using large SATA
drives for data and I can't try on my other main box as the system drive
is RAID0 (two SATA) and there is no way I could get Win Me installed on
there as you need to feed it drivers during the install to get anything
working at all (I use a usb floppy).

Hope all is going well with you "up north".

Yes, interesting stuff Mike. Your WinMe vs. SATA theory certainly sounds
credible but whether or not this is the issue that Chris has, remains to be
seen.

As it happens, I've just spent the last week or so re-installing (clean)
both XP on my 3.5 yr. old Gericom Laptop (Failed HDD - so soon!) and WinMe
on my old Toshiba Tecra (Updated the original 4GB HDD with a 40GB) - and not
a SATA in sight g

Re-assured to find that the WinMe Updates are still available - although I
used the 2004 Windows Security Update CD for most - and finished off with
the WinMe Update site. However MS haven't fixed the MDAC 2.5 issue, it was
still necessary to manually go to the 2.8 SP1 download for the fix.

Hope all is going well with you "up north".

thought I would add to your post an example of what I thought might be a

Microsoft never showed any inclination to fix Windows Update errors that
affected those running Win Me and the MDAC problem was just the last(?) of
many. Sad really.
