Default Missing install option for ini anf ttf font files

There is no "install" option when I right click an ini file or ttf font
files. I checked the registry keys listed he
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;250430

But they are fine on my machine.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

The article you mention has nothing to do with .ini files or .ttf font
files. Neither of those is supposed to have an install option in the
right click. That applies to .inf files.

Typo, ini should be inf.

I know that the article has nothing to do with TTF files, but it seems
more than coincidence that they also do not produce an install option.
I'm assuming that both problems are caused by the same issue.

Again... there is no right-click Install option on a .ttf font so it
is not a coincidence at all.
You only have one problem, and that is a missing right-click install
on the .inf file.

If you have no rightclick install, then make up a file from the lines
below. Copy into a file called inf.reg which should be created in
Notepad. Do not retype, copy in case of errors. The 1st line in the
file is the line REGEDIT4
The last line must be a blank line.
Make sure your mail or news reader does not add any spaces to the end
of a line.
Doubleclick to restore the association.
This assumes that you have set up Win9x using the standard
"c:\windows" folder syntax.
The last text line starts with @= so be careful it does not wrap at
the space before DefaultInstall.
E-mail me if you have any queries on this procedure.

-----copy below this line for inf.reg------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.inf]
@="inffile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile]
@="Setup Information"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\shell32.dll,-151"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\NOTEPAD.EXE %1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell\print]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell\print\command]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\NOTEPAD.EXE /p %1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell\install]
@="&Install"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell\install\command]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\rundll.exe setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection
DefaultInstall 132 %1"

-----end file above this line-------

Thanks Alan, that fixed it. I'm used to looking over what an inf
contains before I allow it to be added to the registry, so I had inf
files associated with UltraEdit, this must have wrecked the install
option.
