Folder Appears at Start Up Everytime!
Hi , just installed Norton Internet Security 2005 it seems to work fine ,
slows it down a lot but it works. Had NAV2002 and Zone Alarm free before along with Lavasoft and SpybotSearch and Destroy so I believe the computer was clean of viruses and spyware. I uninstalled the old firewall and av package installed NAV2005 all was OK. The only problem is on Starting up windows I get an open folder on the Desktop C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared if I close it it goes away but it all happens on reboot. I have checked msconfig and done a bit of looking through the registry and win.ini etc . Does anyone have any ideas ? Uninstalling NAV2005 works but it all happens on reinstall? |

Has NIS (or have you) checked in at LiveUpdate since installing?
Have you contact Symantec Support about the problem? Are you certain NAV 2002 uninstalled cleanly? http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01092114452606 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE) Chris UK wrote: Hi , just installed Norton Internet Security 2005 it seems to work fine , slows it down a lot but it works. go to symantec.com and download msav for your version. It cleans up all the
registry changes norton made. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl= "Alan Edwards" wrote: Check in Msinfo32 for more information than Msconfig Start-Run-msinfo32 If you cannot see anything in Msinfo32 then: Click the + beside Software Environment to expand. Hi thanks for the replies. Yes the old Norton AV ( version 2001 actually)
uninstalled with no halts or messages it was installed as part of System Works 2001 theNorton Utilities section remain and work fine with my Win98se OS. If I need to I could try these clean up methods from Symantec , do I need to ? And would I have to uninstall 2005 version first ? If I disable Symantec Core LC from the start up group the open folder at start up goes . Not sure what this one does a quick search on the user groups doesnr help they just say it is needed. On checking all functions of NAV 2005 seem to work with it disabled from the start up group! MSinfo32 start up log pasted here. In addition-
I have trawlled through the Symantec site for Help with no luck. Symantec offer no telephone or email support here in the UK , well they do but you have to pay for it. Thinking I might return it for a refund and update to free firewall and AVG antivirus free but I do like the anti spam and advert amd popup removal in Nav2005 . But it does slow down the PC AMD1333 with 512Mb DDR mem with two fast WD hard discs. Norton seems to have gone down hill recently and I see they have swallowed up my HD utilities of choice Powerquest and updated their buggy Ghost offering. |

If I had Symantec products (which I wouldn't) then I would leave it
unchecked in Msconfig unless someone can tell you what it does. I tried a couple of Startup sites and they didn't know what it did. You could try the Symantec newsgroups for a definitive answer. ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, "Chris UK" wrote: Hi thanks for the replies. (1) A folder named "C:\Program" would do something like that. "C:\File"
is also forbidden. (Naturally, "C:\Program Files" is fine.) I did test it myself. A folder named "C:\Program" opens a cute little folder in the upper left of the Desktop, named "Program", at boot. When you try to delete it in Explorer, you get a second warning after the confirm of delete, saying something like "system settings (files?) may be affected". Delete any folder named "C:\Program". Reboot.. (2) Is the problem solved? If not, then... | Symantec Core LC Registry (Machine Run) C:\Program Files\Common | Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe start | ccProxy Registry (Machine Service) c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec | Shared\ccProxy.exe Well, look at all those Symantec entries. See how some have quotes; but two don't? Could well be you need quotes around one or both of those two that don't have them. If the cure doesn't last, there may be more work to do. From... http://www.pcmag.com/ 's StartupCop has "undo", and it is more than a combination of "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup Programs" and "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". It can even do a permanent delete. You may create multiple "profiles" of Startup items. ....Quote of a StartupCop Help screen.... Registry (Machine Run) - Each value in the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run defines a startup item. The value's data string is the command to be executed at startup. ....EOF of same................................ So... Open the Registry to... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run ...., and get those quote into the lines, this way... 1. START; Run; Type "RegEdit" & Enter 2. Click the plus (+) signs in the left pane starting at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" & ending at "CurrentVersion". 3. Finally, click the key "Run" in the left pane (not it's plus sign, if any). 4. In the right pane... a. R-Clk "Symantec Core LC Registry" and select "Modify". b. Put quotes around all in Value Data, except the parameter "start"... "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe" start c. Do same for "ccProxy", starting at (a). (There is no parameter, though.)... "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe" d. Close RegEdit. Delete any folder named "C:\Program", again. Reboot. Is all well? -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Chris UK" wrote in message ... | Hi thanks for the replies. Many thanks all PCR especially I altered the reg files with the extra ""
marks and it all starts OK now . Eventually a link to email help on the Symantec site it was so buried away I cant find it again!! I sent them a request for help but you guys have solved it for me before they have even contacted me in reply. Symantec seems to have lost its way since the good old days of Norton and Dos!! Question I will read up more the subject anyway but what does adding the quote marks in the reg do is it a bit like rems or switches in dos? Regards Chris UK |
