Default CD ROM not found by Windows 98

After a failed attempt to add a CDRW along with the
existing CD ROM, I was no longer had a "D" ddrive. I
returned the CD ROM to its original configuration without
the new CDRW but no luck. I have tried everything I can
think of. Windows does not see the installed CD ROM. Any
ideas?

I assume your cd rom was on the secondary channel as

either a master or slave.Assuming you put the jumper back
in the right place and your IDE cables are connected
properly with no bent pins on the Motherboard or on the CD-
ROM,do you see your cd-rom listed as the pc starts it's
boot-up process?.Access your bios setup and see what is
listed for your IDE devices. You should be able to have the
cd-rw and cd-rom together in the system (i do,as master
and slave on the secondary channel. If all the above checks
are ok and Windows still doesn't see your cd-rom,go to
Device Manager and see if you have a conflict on the
secondary channel(where you cd-rom should be anyway).You
can also delete the devices shown in the secondary
channel, then delete the secondary channel and
reboot.Windows will reinstall the secondary channel(have
your Windows cd handy just in case the system asks for
it,probably not).I had a similar problem about 2 years ago
and removing the channel and rebooting cleared up the
problem i was having.Hope this helps
