Default Disk Cleanup - Windows ME

Hi,
My HD free space is reducing at a steady rate apparently as a result of
using the web. I have lost about 2 gigabytes over the last few months. I
haven't created more than a few files (totalling less than 50mb) in that
time.

There are hundreds of files under Windows temp going back years that are not
deleted by the disc cleanup facility.

Is there another facility to enable me to recover the disc space?

Can I safely delete any of the files in Windows temp?

Appreciate any advice.

Many thanks in anticipation,

BarryM

Get CCleaner at www.ccleaner.com You can delete all temp files but first
reboot.

Hmmm
While your problem with files in the TEMP folder obviously needs addressing,
I can't help wondering if there's another culprit at work here?

Are you (or have you ever) using Norton software??

When was the last time you checked that System Restore was working
properly? - what capacity have you allowed it?

When was the last time you emptied your Temporary Internet Files folder? -
and what have you set it's capacity at?

To empty the Windows Temp folder -
Reboot to Safe Mode
Navigate to the C:\Windows \Temp folder, and highlight a file in it - then
hit CTRL+A,
This will highlight ALL the files in the folder - and the subfolders - and
if you have the Status bar showing, it'll tell you how much space is
used....if it's more than 10 % of your C: drive total space (not just the
free space), then STOP THERE, and post back for further instructions

If it's less than 10%, then you can hit the DEL. - which will move the
deleted files to the recycle bin
Once it's given you control back again (it may take a while, if there really
is a lot of stuff there), reboot to Normal Mode and check that everything is
still working - if it is, then you can empty the recycle bin

with IE open go to tools/internet options and now you can delete temp files
and adjust the amount
of temp internet files windows saves under settings.

Noel, I prefer the easier, softer way. Tell the lad to download the freeware
CCleaner, and it'll clean house in seconds. It's highly configurable and
very simple. While's he's at it, he could download the freeware MRUBlaster
and take care of those too.

As the previous poster stated, it is also possible to do it in the browser.
But CCleaner is much easier.

it's STILL important to reboot the system immediately prior to emptying the
TEMP folder - to ensure that any installs/updates are completely installed.
The reason that I suggested the slightly more complex deletion routine in
this case is because it's obvious that the system hasn't been cleaned in a
considerable time, and that it's a second-hand box. the previous owner may
have mistakenly installed programs into the TEMP folder, which will
obviously cease to work after deletion.

Since this is Win ME, there's a distinct possibility that for whatever
reason the System Restore control files may have been corrupted, and that SR
is overflowing its allocation.

Just emptying the TEMP and TIF folders may well not be enough.
