Default Windows 98 SE reports bad sectors, but.....

I have Windows 98 SE. During boot up, the computer
reports there may be bad sectors, and offers to run
Scandisk to fix them. But then it says that it can't
run Scandisk. So, I run Scandisk manualy, with the
option to test the disk surface.

But Scandisk, and Norton Disk Doctor, reports no
problem. And I am stll getting the bad sectors error
during boot up.

How do I get rid of this message?

Do you know who manufactured the hard drive?

Go to their web site and download their diagnostic utility.

The last time I saw this behavior (this morning) it was on a 5 year
old IBM Aptiva with a Maxtor hard drive and the Maxtor diagnostic said
the drive was about to die.

Have to agree with Ron. Anytime the OS complains about the hard drive, and
MS or other tools can locate nothing; use the hard drive manufacturer's
tools for ascertaining the hard disk's reliability and condition.
