Default USB problem

I just read Richard G Harpers problem with his USB and I
think I have the same, I have Win 98SE with two USB ports,
one is occupied with my HP printer and the other I want to
usee a jump drive for back ups, but my computer locks up
when I try to use the jump drive, I do have a USB hub, but
the jump drive did the same thing but I think I had it
switched to run from the computers power supply and not
from the AC outlet, could that be the problem.

Thanks,
David

Default USB problem

Hi!

I don't have USB problems - I have USB solutions. :-)

Yes, the powered hub must be switched over to use external (plug it into a
wall) power, and that power source must be connected. Otherwise you're only
making your problem worse instead of better.

Default USB problem

You're welcome.

Computer USB ports can only supply a small amount of power - usually 500mA
(half an ampere) for desktop PCs, often less than that for notebook PCs - to
the USB devices connected to it. Some devices draw very little power but
others need more than the computer can supply, or if you connect several
devices they may draw more power combined than the port can supply. A
powered hub, hooked up to an external power source, supplies more power than
the internal ports do.
