Default Problem using an USB key

I just got a PQI Traveling disk 2 plus (Id B0256M192IO1012) and I have a problem I can't solve.

If the key works fine on certain computers, I am unable to copy large files or a great number of files from the key to the hard drive on my laptop (Nec Versa Note VX) under win 98 SE.

The copy simply freezes and I have to reboot the computer turning the power off. What is strange is that the problem doesn't occur with the same file but after a while during the copy, with the first, second, third ... file.

Copying files from hard disk to the key works fine, even with large files or great number of files.

The laptop uses a Intel 82440 mx chipset. I checked for a new release of the drivers but didn't find anything, despite an online test with www.drivershq.com tells there are. The USB ports seem OK as far as I can tell : I don't have any trouble with a DSL modem using them and no error reported by the Intel soft usbready.exe

I use the lastest driver provided by PQI, downloaded on the PQI site (UStorageTools2.65.exe). I also tried to recover the key.

I also reinstalled win 98 on itself and tried to install all releases for USBhub, USBbd, USBui... I also tried a “clean install. It doesn't change anything.

I checked with PQI and Nec for any known issues and update / upgrade. Nothing. I tried others key, with there own drivers. The problem still exists, apart with a Verbatim Store'n Go key which seems to have very specific drivers.

When (or just a second before) the computer freezes, the led on the key stops blinking.

Any idea to solve that issue would be greatly appreciate !

Thanks in advance for your help.

PS : I tried the same key with the same laptop model using XP. It works fine.

Default Problem using an USB key

I had a problem like this and fixed it by disabling USB error detection in
the device manager. The option is under my USB host controller. I just
hope I don't come to regret having no error detection.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your input I just tried. Unfortunately, it doesn't solve my problem. The laptop still freezes, even with the error detection disabled.

Default Problem using an USB key

Hi Jeff,
I've also got a PQI travelling disk 2.0 and have exactly the same problem
with W98SE. The issue occurs on both my desktop PC's (different hardware
same OS).

Hopeful for any assistance out there.

Gavin

Default Problem using an USB key

Hi Gavin,

I am still searching a solution...

In my case the PQI key works fine on all the PC using Win 98 SE but not on
my laptop.
Something I didn't try is the UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service
Pack 1.5 found at http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html. I didn't try it
because it is for English version only and I use a French one. If you try it
ans if that solves your problem, please tell me.
