Default Pictures at webshots

I went to webshots and found 2 or 3 pictures I'd like to
use as wallpaper. But I don't want to download any
pictures from webshots. I was told that doing so would
put spyware on my computer.

I clicked on one of the pictures and it became a little
larger. If I right-click on this larger one, do Copy
Picture As, and save the picture as a .jpg in a folder on
my computer (or on a floppy disk) would I then be able to
resize the picture to a larger size using Irfanview?
Would I get spyware by just using Save Picture As instead
of downloading from them?

All I would ever do with any of the pictures is use them
as wallpaper.

Oh, and I heard recently that it's now possible to get
viruses from .jpg images. Is that true?

Thanks for any help.

You were told correctly.

Yes. Assuming the site lets you and the image is able to be saved as JPG. Might
need to save as GIF or BMP. Whatever, you will be able to convert it to any
format and resize, etc., using IrfanView.

Would I get spyware by just using Save Picture As instead

No.

Well, it's still probably, technically stealing, s.

Oh, and I heard recently that it's now possible to get

Yes. Get thee to Windows Updates. If you have Microsoft Office applications, get
thee to Office Updates. Make sure you have a quality Antivirus application (I
prefer E-Trust Antivirus), that you enable "real-time" (background) protection,
and that you update it regularly, at least once a day.

Thanks for any help.

You're welcome,

Webshots does not contain spyware. Webshots will not let
you 'copy' the picture. Irfanview used to allow you to
resize webshots pictures but not any more. Download
webshots.It's free and clear.

OK, maybe these days they don't, but I can't say for sure because to download
anything I have to "register"--put my name on a mailing list. In my mind, being
on the WebShots mailing list or installing spyware--no difference. Webshots,
Incredimail,--nothing is free. You don't pay with money, you pay with problems.

Wrong. I just did it.

I'm not on a mailing list. I have no problems with either
one of those programs. Just bounce their email back to
them and voila you don't exist. You must be using the old
version of Irfanview because you can't do it now. You may
be able to 'copy' the picture but you can't do anything
with it. It's heavily copy-protected.

ROFL!!! You aren't on a mailing list but you get an email. And if you think
bouncing the email back or anything esle you do removes you from that list, I
have a bridge I'd like to sell you. ROTF&LMAO!!!!!

You must be using the old
version of Irfanview because you can't do it now.

Just downloaded anew to make sure. IrfanView version 3.92. Works fine.

You may
be able to 'copy' the picture but you can't do anything
with it. It's heavily copy-protected.

Did you actually try this? Go to www.webshots.com. Click on any category. Click
on any pic (to get the larger version.) Right-click, Save Picture As. Save the
pic, open in IrfanView, resize. Save. Done. It's a crappy quality when enlarged
to my Desktop size (1152x864), but don't be saying it can't be done. That's
simply not true.

Again, I'm not saying it's ethical. Might not even be legal. But it certainly
isn't impossible. It's rather easy, in fact. Give it up, Carol.

Have to agree with Gary here.
You do not have a good firewall if you think Webshots does
not have spyware. Last time I downloaded their program. My
firewall was constantly notifying me that Webshots was
trying to connect to the internet. And the new version had
no way of disarming the auto check like the old one did.
Plus it(Webshots) took all my picture files and turned
them into their format.wbc. Which made it impossible to
view them with my other photo handlers with webshots
uninstalled. Lucky I had them all backed up on CD.
At thier site you can right click on any picture and
select save to your desired folder. It will be saved
as .jpg or .bmp. If you have the Webshots program
installed it will only save in .wbc. And will not let any
other handler view it.

Hi,

Absolutely, there is no spyware in Webshots. I can't say about the
mailing list, although I never got anything from them that I recall(been
a few years since I downloaded it). If I had to register, I would have
used my "spam" address anyway, which I just empty every couple of weeks
without really seeing what's in there. So, maybe they did send me
something, but, see no evil...

As far as copyright protection, I believe you are referring to the
collections,(with a .wbc extension I think); they do offer fairly low
quality(in my opinion) pictures that you can copy off of their site, but
since I don't actually download pictures from them, I couldn't tell you
what the restrictions are. The images in the collections are much higher
quality, hence their request that Irfanview and other editors stop
hacking(stealing) the images by converting them. Hey, it's their ball,
their rules.

Webshots does everything it says it will; I've never had any problems
with it and I have installed it on numerous systems. I always disable
the "daily photo download" feature, decline the option to have it load
in the system tray and if I recall there was also a companion photo
sharing program that I opt out of installing. The clients that have the
program installed like it for its ability to make their own collections
and rotate their wallpaper, create slide-show screen savers(local) and such.

If you're "one of those" who prefer a black screen or feel that the
stock background patterns are enough, then Webshots offers you nothing
of value.

The only caveat I might add is that Webshots was recently purchased by
some large e-company (CNET, maybe, don't quote me on that though, check
with Dan Rather for an accurate report snicker), so all bets are off
on what it has or will become. A little birdie has told me that there
are copies of the setup program (complete with all of the various
sampler collections they used to provide with it) "somewhere" on the
Internet. Not that I would have any idea where. ; ;

Just because WebShots is constantly trying to connect to the site doesn't mean
it's spyware, per se. Connecting to look for new images is what WebShots is all
about. As for the rest of your comments, I can't say. I didn't notice that
"stealing formats" behavior last I looked. Suspect it may have been an "option"
that you failed to turn off during installation. Caveat emptor, especially
during installations. That's why I always use Custom install options and read
them very carefully, canceling if there's any doubt in my mind.

As for MM's comments, all I know is based upon past experience with clients'
machines, and WebShots, at least the free version, *did* install trackers that
qualify as spyware/adware. That simple.

Yes, MM, it's been bought by CNet. Which only makes me expect worse. Reminder in
re copy protection--we were never talking about using the full WBC versions of
WS images, only copying the low-res JPEG images from the site.

I know. I was just clarifying it for Carol as to what was being "heavily
copy-protected". And I would agree that CNET taking it over doesn't bode
well.
