Default Adjustments for RAM

Malcolm

System resources are unrelated to the amount of ram with this possible
exception: Because you have more ram, are you trying to do more at the same
time (dual tasking) which might account for system resources being depleted
faster?

When I used W98 as my primary system, I almost never ran out of resources
because I had very few programs starting at boot and consuming the limited
amount of resources. My rule of thumb was if I did not use a program at
every boot, it did not get started at boot.

Could this be part of the problem?

Unless you are getting *out of memory* messages, nothing is required.

Well, most every session included 3 to 4 times when Win falls over and I
press either the reset button or just turn it off.

I *think* it might be a bad video driver because immediately on boot to
run Troubleshooting for ATI Desktop, I get "There is not enough memory
available for this task. Quit one or more..."

Anyway, it seems like GDI resources are vanishing. I get the old Win 3.1
dialog that says "System resources are low! Quit Explorer?" messages. But
if you quit everything, it's no help. Especially Explorer.

It _does_ seem as though the OS falls over more often since I went from
128MB to 640MB. I tried clicking "Set memory to [512MB]" using msconfig
but got no improvement. In another ramification (so to speak), I was
unable to make a ramdisk with the unused memory. That didn't make any
sense to me and I didn't even try to figure out why. :/

I'll try making the vcache adjustment and see what ensues. Thanks, Ron.
