Help! SE won't boot
I just installed 98SE over itself in hopes of curing a network
problem. It completed normally. Now it won't boot. Just starts out with some error messages that some aps are being shut down for illegal operation - spool32 and Msgsrv32. Then that MSPWL32 won't start, then the blueish green screen of death. Suggestions? I tried the startup floppy to try installing again but the CD Startup ap won't run without Windows. I can't find the booklet that came with the system, if there was one. What now? TIA Ken -- Untie the two knots to email me "Madness is not a consequence of uncertainty, but of certainty." Nietzche |

No suggestions with the limited info you provided. Maybe someone will be
able to help if you post the error messages verbatim. I think it might be a losing cause though as this is what happens when you take a highly patched system with numerous file changes and then install old files over the top. If you want to try another over the top install (probably a waste of time), do it from DOS using the instructions he http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Ken Knecht" wrote in message ... What do you mean "CD Startup ap won't run without Windows"? What exactly are
you doing, and what exactly happens? It sounds like you are using an update disk instead of an installation disk. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Ken Knecht" wrote in message ... Ahhh. You are correct. The SE disk is an upgrade. I suppose I
have to install 98, then upgrade to 98SE? I have a 98 install disk _ I think. Just found it. The 98 disk is an upgrade too. As probably is the 95 disk. Guess I have a boat anchor. Or I'll have to install an older Linux that will run at 133 M. Ken "Jeff Richards" wrote in : What do you mean "CD Startup ap won't run without Windows"? An upgrade CD will install to a clean hard drive or it will do an upgrade.
An UPDATE CD is one that MS sold for $20 and it updated W98 to W98 SE. If this is the disk you have, then there must be a functioning copy of W98 in order to use it. If you have an UPGRADE disk, it should install if you follow the directions on my site. ******** Do any of the illegal operation error messages have a details button? If so, the error messages contained there are the important ones to post--the registers are NOT required. When you post error messages, make sure they are complete and that you spell the words right (compare your final error message to what was actually said). ********** The final error message you listed is probably a result of installing over the top of the existing system and the result is a mismatch between file versions. Here is my standard blurb: I think the best way to explain this error message is to list an example and then walk you through the troubleshooting logic I'd use. **Example**: The LOADWC.EXE file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:wnsprintfA File one is expecting file number two to be able to do something which it cannot do. This generally means the second file was replaced with an older version which doesn't contain the functionality that first file was expecting to find. There's a possibility file number two is corrupt or missing but most likely an older version file is the cause. In either case, replace *your* file two with the correct version. For help finding a MS replacement file, go to the .Dll Help page: http://support.microsoft.com/service...on/dllinfo.asp Do a search on *your* file two and be sure to include the file extension (.dll). Once the results appear, locate the version of file two your PC is using. When you click on the more information link, you will find what product(s) contains that version of the .dll. You should determine if that version belongs to a product you have installed on your machine. If not, it's possible you should have the W98 version of the file. Or, work up the list and see if there is a product installed on your machine that would dictate a newer version. For example, using the sample listed above, you find version 5.0.2614.3500 of the shlwapi.dll is on file and by checking the list of files, you find this version comes with W98SE. Going up the list, you find version 5.50.4134.600 is contained in IE 5.50. If you had updated your browser to IE5.5, there's the probable problem--the correct version of shlwapi.dll got overwritten by the copy with comes with W98SE. Finally, the troubleshooting information above centers on file two since it usually will be the source of the problem; however, file one could also be an incorrect version. If this is the case, you will probably find a newer version of the first file has inappropriately replaced the original file and that's why the second file does not seem to have the right functionality. In this case, go to the .Dll Help page and locate the version of file one. If it is distributed with a program that you do not have, go down the list until you locate a program you do have installed. That will probably be the version of the .dll to restore. ************ Since the system won't start, if you want to replace files you will have to do so from DOS. Here's my standard blurb: To replace a missing or corrupt file with an original copy, you must locate the file in the .cab files on your W98 CD or from whatever source media that contains the file. (Note: the file may not be in a .cab file and if so, disregard the instructions on .cabs and simply copy the file to a floppy disk.) Using the machine you are posting with, open Explorer and select the folder containing the .cab files. Open the Tools menu, click Find, Files and type: *.Cab in the Named box. Type the name of the wanted file in the Containing Text box and click Find Now. This lists the .cab file your wanted file is located in. Double click the .cab file to see what's in it and right click to extract the wanted file to a floppy disk. Boot with a floppy start up disk--CDRom support is not required. If you do not have a start up disk, make one with the Fat32ebd.exe file located on the W98 CD: tools/mtsutil/fat32ebd. At the A: prompt, put in the floppy containing the file you extracted. Assuming you are replacing a .dll file named xyz, type: Copy A:\xyz.dll C:\windows\system\xyz.dll and hit enter. Once the file is copied, remove the floppy disk and reboot. While ..dll files are filed in the system folder, other files may be filed elsewhere so make sure you specify the right folder. ************* Do you have files that you need to back up on the computer? If so, perhaps the method listed in this article will get you into Windows so you can back up. Recovering From a Failed Internet Explorer Upgrade in Windows 98 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;249191 If this doesn't work, you could mount the hard drive into the computer you are using to post with and use it to back up any needed data. ************ If it were me, I would not waste too much more time trying to fix the system. I would install the system clean and start over. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Ken Knecht" wrote in message ... Had a thought. I checked and was in error. My 98 CD is an
upgrade, 98SE CD an update. What if I install 98 over my bad 98SE install, then reinstall 98SE over 98, assuming 98 runs? Or maybe better yet, first delete the C:\Windows directory. I'd prefer not to format C: if possible. What do you think? If not, I'll try your suggestions instead. An upgrade disk should work OK with a blank hard disk drive, but an update
disk will give a message like the one you are seeing. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Ken Knecht" wrote in message ... Ahhh. You are correct. The SE disk is an upgrade. You cannot install W98 over SE because SE is a newer system. You can
install W98 to a different folder or delete the Windows folder from DOS--neither will require a format but both will require the reinstallation of all software. Once W98 is installed, you could then use the update CD to upgrade to SE.
