Default Hard drive too big for bios.

Hi all,

I just tried to install an 80G hard drive in an
older clone computer that has W98SE installed.
The bios only "sees" 33G of it. I booted to
partition magic and it only saw 33G of it. Is
there any way I can set this drive up as the C:
drive with W98SE installed on it? without
either changing the bios or getting a newer
motherboard or adding a pci/ide controller
card?

thanks,
charles.....

Another solution is overlay software. It has its drawbacks. More can be
found he

Don't know why one would avoid upgrading the BIOS. If the mfg doesn't have
one, maybe one exists he

I agree, buying a custom BIOS is not usually cost effective. I thought
there was a reason to not use a free BIOS. I've had luck with the
rainbow-software site. And you're welcome.

It is usually cheaper to get another motherboard since the price
of bioses are more than a whole motherboard.

thanks....

That sounds like a pre 1999 Award BIOS and by checking the motherboard site,
you can probably download an update so you can flash the BIOS. It is
essential that the PC be running on an UPS so as to avoid any power
fluctuations during the BIOS update. Drive overlay software may be a work
around; however, it comes with its own baggage. Check the hard drive web
site for software downloads (or there may have been a disk that came with
your hard drive).
