Shortcuts to Internet Explorer not functioning
Hello Group, A friend asked me for help with a problem. As I was unable to solve the problem, I was hoping someone in the group might have an answer. System running Windows 98SE and Internet Explorer 6. As well as the stock Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, this person had a shortcut icon to the progam on the desktop (don't know why), and one in the quick launch bar. Using either of the shortcut icons caused the hourglass cursor for up to 30 seconds, followed by the cursor going back to an arrow pointer without Internet Explorer opening. Going to Windows Explorer and clicking on the Internet Explorer icon under Desktop will cause the program to open. I thought the shortcuts were just faulty for some reason, so I told the friend to delete them and create new ones. The newly created icons worked just fine - - -UNTIL the computer was shut down and rebooted. Then, they acted just as the previous ones did - hourglass cursor followed by IE not opening. I don't think this is a problem with IE itself, but rather something to do with the shortcut icons. This is all the info I have so far. If you can suggest tests or things to check, I will do so and post again. Thank you in advance to anyone who can assist with this problem. Judy |

Judy try a "repair" on IE first (add/remove programs...select repair) as long as the shortcuts point to Iexplorer.exe they should work....you can use tweakui to rebuild icons if you wish |

Reminds me of the time I removed the 'IsShortCut' entries from the
registry in order to get rid of the little shortcut arrows, which promptly broke my desktop shortcut's function keys. They would work if recreated or reassinged a function key, but as soon as I rebooted the keys would no longer work. Never experienced same behavior with ie shortcuts, I'm sure I would have noticed that, but didn't. Still, I'd put the IsShortcut entries back in the registry if they are missing just to see if that helps any. Otherwise repair or better, reinstall ie. Type Msinfo32 into the Run Box and select Tools, first choice should be Internet Explorer Repair Tool. When reinstalling ie be sure to check all the boxes for items that were previously installed or you will be wasting your time. Judy wrote in message . ..
