Default MVP's, Oldtimers, & Other "keepers of links list"

Almost anyone reading these newsgroups will soon compile a listing
of links for future reference.

I'm wondering how you experts keep such a list current.

Do you use a "script" or some utility like "FavOrg" to update redirected
links, etc.?

I organize my links like I organize the rest of my life... In piles here and
there, stuffed into closets, strewn about the yard... Mostly, I try to
remember where the other MVPs live and what their specialty is, IOW, I keep
the super-references in my head and branch out from there.

I keep a text file shortcut on the desktop (Office Bar) then
copy/paste text and links. I date them and use some keywords in the
caption so I can easily find what I need with search. My entries go
back to 1996. I deleted stuff that isn't needed anymore.

I use A as the first letter of the name of the file so it stays at
the top of the list in My Documents, if I want to find it from
Windows Explorer. I also save it to my Web site so I can use it away
from home.

I keep my links in a very simple, very cheap Database
(MSWorks Version 4.5a ...$3.95 from ebay)
It will hold 32,000 records or links, you just paste any link
into a "link field" cell and precede it with an "
You may wish to have another field to denote topic
for searching purposes.

As an example, I just opened the database
pasted in search "works" from 14,000 entries

http://www.global-search.net/cs.htm Computer Software Search: Works
http://www.directdeals.com/search.asp Software General inc Works

http://www.internet4classrooms.com/sysresource.htm Learn to operate Works
http://www.dirtcheapsoftware.com/ MSWorks Software

easy, peasy.

All notes, standard blurbs and links are compiled in an MS Word doc.

I don't check all the links in the file unless I come across a
recent reference to an important one, then I check/change mine.

I check all links before I post any to the group.

I make sure to have some of these invaluable 'what to do when you're in the poo' posts from tried, trusted and true guru's in this newsgroup. Clean them up a bit and save as text files in a folder on C: drive called __NERDY_ (So NEXT time I'm stuck in the black screen, help is at hand.)

I use a program called Vault from http://www.personalmicrocosms.com/

It is actually an Outliner intended for use by writers, but I find
that it works quite well for keeping various notes and links in a
structured format.
