Error "Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.dll

Running Windows ME and Explorer 5.5.
Cannot open Scansoft Pagis 2 files, get Error "Explorer
has caused an error in SHELL 32.dll"
Cannot update Windows critical updates, it will download
but not install.Cannot upgrade from Explorer 5.5 to 6.
Have tried re installing Windows ME.
Can anybody help please?

Dunno about Scansoft prob but I too had trouble upgrading
from Explorer 5.5 to 6 and only found the answer on this
newsgroup recently.
Go to
c:\program files\internet explorer\uninstall information.
Delete all the \uninstall information files (after copying
them to a Temp folder; if this fix doesn't work you can
move them back).
Then run IE6 upgrade. Worked for me.
