Crash during installation...
I have an old Proteva computer to fix up for my grand kids. I checked
out the hard drive and it is fine. I zeroed it out and fdisked and formatted it. When Windows 98 SE install program gets to where I put in the Product Key, Windows crashes. It says msgsrv32 cause a general protection fault in User.exe. I can't get past this point. What do I need to do to get Windows installed? |

Crash during installation...
I guess EXTRACT a new copy of User.exe & perhaps even Msgsrv32.exe...
MSGSRV32.EXE Desc: Windows 32-bit VxD Message Server Loc: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM Size: 11,920 bytes Mod: Friday, April 23, 1999 10:22:00 PM Ver: 4.10.2222 That one seems never to have been updated. EXTRACT it. USER.EXE Desc: Windows User-interface core component Loc: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM &: C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS Size: 549,760 bytes Mod: Wednesday, April 19, 2000 01:02:44 PM Ver: 4.10.2227 That does seem to have been updated. If you have a copy in C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\, the folder, then... (1) Boot to DOS. Hold CNTR for the Startup Menu, & select "Command Prompt Only" (2) At DOS, enter... (a) DIR C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\User.exe /a It will say "File not found" or list it... C:\DIR C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\User.exe /a Directory of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS USER EXE 549,760 04-19-00 1:02p USER.EXE 1 file(s) 549,760 bytes (b) If it was listed, then... REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\User.exe User.exeX COPY C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\User.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (3) Can you boot? If so, fine. Otherwise, Extract the old one at DOS, to start. Then, you may wish to update it, perhaps with a visit to Windows Update. "EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System LOC\Base4.cab User.exe" That is all one line between the quotes with 5 spaces, but do not enter the quotes. It will offer to overwite, if one is already there. LOC is the location of "Base4.cab". This may be discovered as follows... C:\DIR /s /a C:\base4.cab Directory of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS BASE4 CAB 168,960 04-23-99 10:22p BASE4.CAB 1 file(s) 168,960 bytes If you have the .cabs on a CD, you will use your CD-ROM drive letter, instead of "C:\" in that DIR command. So, in my case, the command is... "EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\Base4.cab User.exe" All one line: no quotes: there are 5 spaces in the line, including one after "Base4.cab". For the other... "EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\Base4.cab MSGSRV32.EXE" -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Dennis" wrote in message ... | I have an old Proteva computer to fix up for my grand kids. I think if I were in that position, I'd start all over again and see if it
happens again, which (hopefully) is unlikely. Dennis wrote: I have an old Proteva computer to fix up for my grand kids. I checked out the hard drive and it is fine. I reformatted the hard drive and started installation again. While
copying files it suddenly just stopped at 82%. I rebooted and restarted installation again. Again at 78% it stopped copying files and did nothing. I tried again. Now while copying files I get a "SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE". Could this be from some kind of hardware problem? Possibly. I'll have to let others weigh in on that, but it's beginning to
sound that way (at least to me, but I may be mistaken) Dennis wrote: I reformatted the hard drive and started installation again. While copying files it suddenly just stopped at 82%. There should be an SU number with the SUWIN error message, such as those seen in

Good going, Glen! It may not necessarily be hardware related then, just
looking over one of those articles, so hopefully it's something he could reconfigure, then. glee wrote: There should be an SU number with the SUWIN error message, such as those seen in this article = "SU" Error Message List for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me Setup: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=129971 Look for your number in the list there, to determine what might be the cause. How about answering my question from a week and a half ago, what the SUWIN error
was that you were getting? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Dennis" wrote in message ... Now I have a new error message.
