Default Win98 SE 48bit LBA support for esdi_506.pdr driver

Dear MS Customer Support!

I would like to convince You to enhance support for esdi_506.pdr IDE driver,
becouse all current Intel based PC systems (chipset 865/875/915/925 with 48Bit
BIOS suport) has controllers which use esdi_506.pdr driver to handle IDE drives.
As all we know there is no support of large IDE 48-bit for drives connected
using esdi_506.pdr as channel controller driver.

The original Intel Application Accellerator doesn't suport Windows 98SE/ME
systems for large drives for chipsets 865/875/915/925 (only chipsets i860 and
olders are supported by this application). These Intel chipsets: 865/875/915/925
offers driver for Hard Disk Controller (82801EB) but it uses esdi_506.pdr IDE
driver which is limited to 32-bit LBA acess.

It is very simple for You to enhance support becouse You have source code of
esdi_506.pdr IDE driver.
There is a big demand for all people who have to use Win98SE system for
software-test purposes or use it every day to have possibility to work on large
IDE drives.

Regards,
Mike.

As Ron said, Microsoft does not monitor this forum and you will get no
official answer from a posting here. I might also point out that Windows 98
is currently in an extended support phase where only critical updates are
being provided, so the odds are that your request will go unanswered.

Without commenting the conditions in which the 128 GB problem occur, I
can say that it is a critical error and bug that a disk is reported by
the operating system as larger than 32 GB or 128 GB, but all data
written more than 32 GB or 128 GB into the disk are written to wrong
locations. The Microsoft partition related bugs damages terabytes of
data each day.

It would be about the same chance.

Realize that Microsoft never fixed 1 single partition related bug, and
never described such a bug correctly.

If anybody thinks that, they will have to provide an example.

The 32 GB problem as example. In addition to that we have the 128 GB
problem for 98/ME, 2000 and original XP. The more than 1 primary FAT
for DOS/95/98/ME and the different extended on different disks for
DOS/95/98/ME. The 98 fdisk update is buggy, DOS 95/98/ME extended type
05 above cylinder 1023 handling is stupid. All these bugs have caused
data loss.

Some bugs have been fixed in new products, but a reasonable update for
a current product was never provided.

MS will not make an official reply to this newgroup. That includes any MS
official that monitors this newsgroup unofficially.
I can assure you that MS is fully aware of the 48 bit LBA problem with the
Win9X operating systems, and has been aware of it for quite some time.
There is not just one, but many problems with this. Windows rides on the
disk operating system (DOS), and has an environment called "windows". The
48 bit access problem has to be addressed in both environments. In
addition, windows tools like scandisk and defrag were not designed to work
in the environments if the OS can address 48 bit disk access. Am not sure,
but windows explorer may have problems in this environment as well. There
may be other unknowns that will have problems as well.

So, as you can easily see, windows 9X needs a complete revamp to work in the
environment that can access 48 bit LBA. MS has been developing their more
current OSes to work properly in this area. So, I don't expect MS to revamp
Win98/98SE for that purpose.

My suggestion is to use their most current operating system if you require
48 bit LBA on your hard drives for full capacity use, and for windows disk
tools to operate correctly as well. To avoid partition size limitations,
use the NTFS for a filesystem vice FAT32.
