Default Removal of no-name devices from Multimedia in Control panel

Hello group,
There are these unnamed devices in the Multimedia Devices tab which I
wanted to remove, although they don't seem to effect anything, but when I
rt. click and click Properties then "Remove", the box comes up saying I have
to go through the System Device Manager where there are no such devices. I
have looked at this in Safe mode but no ghost devices show up.

Can I get rid of these by a registry edit? If so, what to edit?
Thank you,
ern.

The Devices tab of the MM control panel have a number of categories with + signs
beside them. In which categories are the blank "no-name" entries?

Thank you for looking at this Glen.

There are :
3 under "Audio Devices" marked "Audio for" with no name,
4 under "MIDI Devices" marked " MIDI for",
2 under "Mixer Devices" called "Mixer for",
2 under "Line Input Devices" and under "Video Capture Devices" I have one
with no name at all and one called "Intel Video Capture Driver" which does
not correspond to any installed hardware.

You said you tried to remove said items from Safe Mode, but no ghost devices showed
up.. In what Device Manager categories did you look? I would go to the Sound, Video
and Game Controllers category and remove *everything* listed there, in Safe Mode.
Be sure to have your driver discs for the installed devices, and your Windows CD,
should any be required for reinstallation of your drivers when you restart in normal
mode.

While still in Safe Mode Device Manager, also remove any and all items listed in the
"Other" category, if it exists.

The Registry keys involved should be found under this key, if you'd rather search
the Registry manually for the offenders:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\contro l\MediaResources

and he

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\MEDIA

Yes it was the "Sound, video and game controllers" group in Device Manager I
looked in and nothing odd nor duplicated even in safe mode.
Reason I don't want to delete everything is I don't have the CD for my modem
which has a component in there and, I was running with the onboard sound
disabled in BIOS and had cleaned up the sound card entries before.

Thank you for the registry locations, after exporting the
control\MediaResources key I have removed the extra devices . I also removed
some seemingly duplicate Video Compression Codecs and Media Control Devices
which could be done through the Multimedia applet.

Under the Services\Class\MEDIA key I found An almost duplicate Voice Modem
device and a device with no name and, after backing up the key, deleted
them. They did not show up in Safe Mode.

Another matter arose while clicking down to Services\Class, I am finding
references to an HP
printer/scanner driver that I wanted to uninstall but the .msi file was
missing and the
uninstall failed. I deleted the folder, cleaned the installer and
HKLM\Software sections of the registry, I know there are related files in
C:\Windows but I left them, should I leave these too. I suppose I am asking
how to uninstall the un-uninstallable. I have several software items in that
category but the HP is the only device.

Regards,
ern.

Where have you found the reference to the HP printer?
Is it a sub-key of this key?

Default Removal of no-name devices from Multimedia in Control panel

The HP references are subkeys of:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class
There are 5 {Class id.} type keys each pointing to another key further down
with a descriptive name and containing icon details, and other info. The
Printers subkey only has a reference to the currently installed printer (an
Epson).

I am thinking these may be used by the Add New Hardware Wizard in the
'Choose which type of device you want to add' phase and as such are
irritating but harmless.

During the previous attempt to eradicate this HP "All in One" driver I
searched the registry using the string "DOT4" and came up with :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\cfgmgr32\Phanto
m
but did not dare edit it. Is it another irritating but harmless thing?
Thank you,

I have no idea, on both counts. I don't have anything like either of those, nor do

particular keys for safekeeping, then deleting the keys and seeing if it makes a
difference to anything.

Thank you for that. No "Phantom" key seems OK on another machine I have

Hello, mae, it occurred to me these may be backups, created by setup when I
upgraded from 98 to 98se, of the enum items then found, even if the hardware
is not there. Certainly the data contains the registry path to them. There
are 47(hex) sub keys in the exported file which is, um, 71 whereas the
current enum has 59.

I would be interested to know how you went about demolishing that HP
install, didn't the installer work for you either?

Regards,
ern.

I have the phantom keys. (CurrentVersion\cfgmgr32\Phantom)
Once I was testing CD drives and I just removed those (10) keys.
I also removed the key for a HP printer that I happily demolished.
I wanted to prevent ever fooling with it again.
I have numbers 1 thru 39, and then A thru E and then numbers 1-2-3 before
the letters.
That was for 98 and when I first reinstalled 98se, there were none.
Checking 98se now it has added all of the same.
I have no unknown in DM.

| Thank you for that. No "Phantom" key seems OK on another machine I have
| here. It existed and deleting it does not prevent it from boot up so I
will
| try deleting it from this machine which I use more and see if any

problems
| arise in daily use.

| I have no idea, on both counts. I don't have anything like either of
| those, nor do
| the machines I work on. I suggest either leaving them alone, or
exporting
| the
| particular keys for safekeeping, then deleting the keys and seeing if

it
| makes a
| difference to anything.

| The HP references are subkeys of:
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class
| There are 5 {Class id.} type keys each pointing to another key

further
| down
| with a descriptive name and containing icon details, and other info.
The
| Printers subkey only has a reference to the currently installed
printer
| (an
| Epson).
|
| I am thinking these may be used by the Add New Hardware Wizard in

the
| 'Choose which type of device you want to add' phase and as such are
| irritating but harmless.
|
| During the previous attempt to eradicate this HP "All in One" driver

I
| searched the registry using the string "DOT4" and came up with :
|
|

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\cfgmgr32\Phanto
| m
| but did not dare edit it. Is it another irritating but harmless

thing?
| Thank you,
| ern.

| Where have you found the reference to the HP printer?
| Is it a sub-key of this key?

| Yes it was the "Sound, video and game controllers" group in

Device
| Manager I
| looked in and nothing odd nor duplicated even in safe mode.
| Reason I don't want to delete everything is I don't have the CD
for
| my
| modem
| which has a component in there and, I was running with the

onboard
| sound
| disabled in BIOS and had cleaned up the sound card entries

before.
|
| Thank you for the registry locations, after exporting the
| control\MediaResources key I have removed the extra devices . I
also
| removed
| some seemingly duplicate Video Compression Codecs and Media
Control
| Devices
| which could be done through the Multimedia applet.
|
| Under the Services\Class\MEDIA key I found An almost duplicate
Voice
| Modem
| device and a device with no name and, after backing up the key,
| deleted
| them. They did not show up in Safe Mode.
|
| Another matter arose while clicking down to Services\Class, I am
| finding
| references to an HP
| printer/scanner driver that I wanted to uninstall but the .msi
file
| was
| missing and the
| uninstall failed. I deleted the folder, cleaned the installer

and
| HKLM\Software sections of the registry, I know there are related
| files
| in
| C:\Windows but I left them, should I leave these too. I suppose

I
am
| asking
| how to uninstall the un-uninstallable. I have several software
items
| in
| that
| category but the HP is the only device.

| ern.

| You said you tried to remove said items from Safe Mode, but no
| ghost
| devices showed
| up.. In what Device Manager categories did you look? I would

go
| to
| the
| Sound, Video
| and Game Controllers category and remove *everything* listed
| there, in
| Safe Mode.
| Be sure to have your driver discs for the installed devices,

and
| your
| Windows CD,
| should any be required for reinstallation of your drivers when
you
| restart
| in normal
| mode.
|
| While still in Safe Mode Device Manager, also remove any and

all
| items
| listed in the
| "Other" category, if it exists.
|
| The Registry keys involved should be found under this key, if
| you'd
| rather
| search
| the Registry manually for the offenders:
|
|
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\contro l\MediaResources
|
| and he
|
|

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\MEDIA

| Thank you for looking at this Glen.
|
| There are :
| 3 under "Audio Devices" marked "Audio for" with no name,
| 4 under "MIDI Devices" marked " MIDI for",
| 2 under "Mixer Devices" called "Mixer for",
| 2 under "Line Input Devices" and under "Video Capture

Devices"
I
| have
| one
| with no name at all and one called "Intel Video Capture
Driver"
| which
| does
| not correspond to any installed hardware.

| Hello group,
| There are these unnamed devices in the Multimedia
| Devices
| tab
| which I
| wanted to remove, although they don't seem to effect
| anything,
| but
| when
| I
| rt. click and click Properties then "Remove", the box
comes

are
no

show

|
| Can I get rid of these by a registry edit? If so, what

to

| Thank you,
