No scan disk after bad shutdown
I run Windows 98 Second Edition.
Last night I carelessly pushed the on/off button on my tower to turn the computer off. All programs were closed (nothing on the taskbar). I routinely do start shutdown shutdown, but it was late and I was tired and obviously not thinking very well. When I turned the computer on today it started normally. But an automatic scan disk did not run first. I checked msconfig general tab advanced button and there is no check mark in the box in front of "disable scan disk after bad shutdown." I manually ran a standard scan disk and no errors were found. Why didn't scan disk run? Is there a problem? Anything I should do? Thank you. Michael |

Michael You're the first person I hear complain that w98 does not run scandisk. Nothing is wrong. When windows is changing something on harddisk a flag is set in in the FAT area of the disk. When change is ready the flag is cleared. When the PC boots and the flag is there, scandisk will run. Scandisk didn't run for you, so windows was doing totally nothing when you switched off the computer. The disk could not be corrupted. |

No scan disk after bad shutdown
With a modern computer, if you push the on/off button it actually performs a
clean shutdown (as if you'd done start - etc.) If you had nothing running that may have happened very quickly so you didn't notice it. Simon "Michael" wrote in message ... I though scandisk was run if Windows does not find (or it is not complete)
the shutdown log?? Simon "Isaac" - wrote in message ... "Michael" wrote in : I run Windows 98 Second Edition. Last night I carelessly pushed the on/off button on my tower to turn the computer off. No scan disk after bad shutdown
Michael -
Probably all processes were stopped and there wasn't a need to run ScanDisk. However, you can take a look into the Msconfig utilityStartup tab. Look to see if ScanRegistry is present and enabled to run at startup. Normal path in W98se machines is C:\Windows\scanregw.exe /autorun (note: there is a space between the " .exe" and the "/" ). If it isn't present (Unlikely, but that has happened to me), then you would have to add it to the Registry at the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run -- LuckyStrike How to make a good newsgroup post: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/post.html -------------------------------------------------------------------- "Michael" wrote in message ... Simon http://www.geocities.com/thestarman3...tdownFlag.html When you switch off your computer while windows is running, but there's no disk activity, you have a good chance you will not see scandisk. Alas mostly when the system crashes, it was accessing the disk. I've got a dual boot system, with 2 instances of W98, one for me, and one for my children. They have shared one partition, and have each three private partitions. When the installation of my children has crashed (which happens often, I wouldn't know why ), and I boot my instance, (which shut down properly), the shared partition is scanned. I don't know of a shutdown log, besides bootlog.txt, which only is made when turned on explicitly at boot. |

No scan disk after bad shutdown
As has been said, Windows will not auto-Scandisk, unless it deems there
was a possible write to be done to a partition. It won't necessarily be an app you opened that may need to do it, but it could be a background task. You are probably all right; still, it won't hurt to check various settings... (1) Do you have a "Scandisk.alt"? Then, Norton took over Scandisk. So, look inside of it & in Norton menus/Norton FAQs/Norton Readme for an answer. I do know: When Norton has been uninstalled & Scandisk auto-Scandisk doesn't work, Glee will say to delete that file! (But that's when it's been uninstalled.) (2) As Blanton has said, Scandisk will not necessarily run. It depends whether a write was pending at the time of the crash. If you do crash, it is always wise to run your own Scandisk, anyhow, as the auto-Scandisk is too quick to be doing it all. JUST... don't let yours constantly restart! (3) Look in "C:\Scandisk.log" to see what it may say. Colorado was getting messages in there, even when it seemed the thing was not running! (4) Open "C:\Windows\Command\Scandisk.ini" in Notepad. Change "NumPasses=0" to a positive number. Mine is "=5". (However, if Norton has taken you over, perhaps look in "Scandisk.alt" for that.) (5) http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q118/5/79.asp Contents of the Windows MSDOS.sys File Careful with MS-DOS.sys: It is an important file. (a) "START button, Settings, Folder Options, View tab". Bolt "Show all files" & UNcheck "Hide file extensions..." (b) R-Clk "C:\MSDOS.sys" in Explorer, select Properties, & turn off "Read-Only" (c) Open "C:\MSDOS.sys" in Notepad. If it shows "AutoScan=0", change that to "=1". (The line may be at bottom, after the filler "X's".) (b) R-Clk "C:\MSDOS.sys" in Explorer, select Properties, & turn "Read-Only" back on. This setting probably is equivalent to all that (but it may get out-of-synch)... (a) "START, Run, MSConfig, General tab, Advanced button" (b) Uncheck "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown". (6) As cquirke is fond of saying, "C:\Winboot.ini", if it exists, will override MSDOS.sys. So, check for a "AutoScan=0" in there as well, as it has the same format as the other. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Michael" wrote in message ... | I run Windows 98 Second Edition. | | Last night I carelessly pushed the on/off button on my | tower to turn the computer off.
