Changing application names?
Hi i would like to know is it possible to change the name
that is displayed for an application when you press ctrl-alt-del Ok if that wasn't clear......When you press ctrl-alt-del in windows 98 a list pops up with all the names of the current applications which are running. Now lets say for example one of the applications is 'MSN MESSENGER' then in the list it shows the name 'Msnmsgr'. Now i would like to know is it possible to actually change that name which is being displayed (for example going into the registry and just changing a few keys or something like that) Or if that is not possible, is there atleast a way i can hide/stop the name of the application showing up in that list. Would be really grateful if someone can solve my problem, thanks alot! |

scribbled some thoughts: Hi i would like to know is it possible to change the name=20 that is displayed for an application when you press=20 ctrl-alt-del Ok if that wasn't clear......When you press ctrl-alt-del=20 in windows 98 a list pops up with all the names of the=20 current applications which are running. Now lets say for=20 example one of the applications is 'MSN MESSENGER' then in=20 the list it shows the name 'Msnmsgr'. Now i would like to=20 know is it possible to actually change that name which is=20 being displayed (for example going into the registry and=20 just changing a few keys or something like that) Or if=20 that is not possible, is there atleast a way i can=20 hide/stop the name of the application showing up in that=20 list. Would be really grateful if someone can solve my=20 problem, thanks alot! If it's an application? Don't believe so, a file other than an application? That may depend on a few factors. If you want a list of what proggie you have installed, type at the = command line (StartRun): Command /k DIR C:\*.exe /s/o C:\Windows\Desktop\EXE-List.txt --=20 Sincerely, | (=A9) (=A9) | ------ooo--(_)--ooo------ Andrew H. No on the name change.
If you don't start a program, it doesn't show on the list. Perhaps this is what you want: My personal rule of thumb is if a program is not used during every computer session, I do not allow it to start at boot. To cut back on the number of programs starting at boot, check the programs themselves for an option not to load. You might have to double click an icon in the tray (others might require a right click) and then look for preferences or options. If you cannot find an option, look for the program in the following start up points and remove the reference to it: Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe): 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run 2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce 4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce 5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices 6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServicesOnce 7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunOnce\Setup If poking around in the registry is not for you, there is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager, http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/ You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however, by doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There might be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program loads again after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on the program itself. If you don't know what an entry is, check he http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Pyre" wrote in message ... No i do want the program to start, but i just don't want
it to be seen or detected. I thought there would be atleast a way to hide it because i've known some spyware to be running in the background without it even showing a trace of it running. So i want something similar along those lines to run a program that is almost undetectable...or atleast that it not show up when you press ctrl-alt-del -----Original Message----- No on the name change.
