Default Strang problem...

Have an older(standby-playwith) system, 950mhz, 256 mem. 98se...

Had the origianl 16 meg AGP card that went out. Put an "older" 8meg PCI card
in until I picked up a newer 32 meg AGP card. System picked up the old card
but real slow painting video.
Wanted to really clean up system so reformatted HD and started to reload
98se.
Here's the problem/situation.
When I replaced card the system shuts down when 98se starts to load.
IF I put the PCI card back into a slot, even though the monitor is still
hooked up to the AGP card, everything works.
Even after 98se loads I get the same problem. IOW- if I shut down the system
and take the PCI video card out of MB, the system shuts down/locks-up,
etc.etc.

Had a friend state that the MB may be "bad".

Any suggestions,

L.

Go into the BIOS and see if you can change the Primary vid card there.
PCI is the backup and default selection, I believe.
Change it to AGP.
Just for the heck of it, remove and firmly reseat the AGP vid card and ,while
your in there, do the same for the ram stick(s).

The only "thing" I can find in BIOS is;

In PNP/PCI Config.
VGA boot from xxxx. xxx=APG.
Is this where you directing me?
Not that familiar with BIOS settings.
Checked card and ram sticks.

Here's more info..
The grean light on monitor turns orange AND the HD red light is lite.
The system runs until the Win screen comes up for ~ 2 seconds before system
locks.

On intitial start up the NVIDIA TNT2 32 meg card is showing.

Actually, I've got it up and running OK.
Just have to keep the old 8 meg video card in a PCI slot?????

Starting to reload the programs/files that I need.
As I said, this system is a backup AND something I can play with to learn.
I have no idea how/why to take the PCI video card out and keep system from
locking up. As stated earlier, I don't know that much about BIOS but willing
to learn and/or test and IF I mess it up tooooo much, no big deal. :-)

Remove and reseat the TNT2 32 card again and make sure it is firmly seated.
Strange that the PCI vid card has to be in when the monitor is connected to the
AGP card.
What is the make/model of your PC?
As far as the BIOS goes, mine has items in that section such as:
Plug and Play Aware O//S Yes or No (Yes)
Primary Graphics Adapter AGP or PCI (AGP)
Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA Yes or No (Yes)
For your entry "VGA boot from xxxx. xxx=APG" what are the options?
Perhaps your new TNT2 32 vid card is faulty, but hopefully not.
Have you downloaded the drivers for the TNT2 card yet?
http://support.tangent.com/hardware/...rd/vga-031.htm
Read through the whole article as it mentions some things about the BIOS halfway
down.
Good and helpful article.
You may even have to install the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard to
use that card.

I've tried ALL suggestions and the system keeps locking up if I take the old
PCI card out.
The only thing, error msg, I received was something along the lines of "c:
set TV dumpxxxxx"
It appeared and disappeared to fast to write down and I can't get it to do
it again!@##!

Everything is running OK. I let the driver load for the old Matox video card
and just clicked "disable in -----".

Weirdest thing I've ever encountered but it's up and running.

Thanks to all, (unless other suggestions),

L.

c:\setTVdumpflags=8

I belive that is added to AUTOEXEC.BAT by Zone Alarm.

If you don't want to see it,
run MSCONFIG,
click the AUTOEXEC.BAT tab,
and add the following command as the first line
@ECHO OFF
