Default Update that isn't saving on my comp.

Everyday my it comes up telling me there is an important update (823559:
Security Update for Microsoft Windows) and i should do it, BUT i'v done it
everyday for like a week and it doesnt seem to be "saving" to my comp. I also
went and downloaded the file another way and loaded it but it still didnt
save after my comp was turned off. I'v given up trying to download it since
it doesnt want to stay of the comp. but im getting tired of the window coming
up everyday, any idea how i can get it to fix itself and save on my comp?

(1) The problem of various updates continually offered rears it's ugly
head every so often. I didn't see yours specifically mentioned at
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Perhaps look for something similar &/or otherwise harmless. I believe
there is a method there to inform MS of the problem.

(2) Definitely try this...
Most of the following shall never return again, and were work files,
pre-V4:
(a) "START, Settings, Folder Options, View tab"; bolt "Show all
files" & UNcheck "Hide file extensions...".
(b) Open Explorer to "C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate", and
(c) Delete everything in this folder EXCEPT the V4 folder.
(d) Open the V4 folder, and delete everything in it EXCEPT for the
"iuhist.xml" file.

(3) Try the other measures in this URL...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585
WINUP: "Software Update Incomplete, This Windows Update Software Did Not
Update Successfully" Error Message When You Visit the Windows Update Web
Site

(4) Try to uninstall it FIRST, at "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,
Install/Uninstall tab". It looks like this: "Windows 98 Q823559 Update".
Now, go to site, and see whether it will come in well-- just once.

(5) Did you do a "Scanreg /Restore" after taking that update? Then, you
may have wiped the Registry entries below. What are your versions of
these files...?...
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;823559
....Quote.. Win98 files...
Date Time Version Size
File name
------------------------------------------------------------------------
27-Jun-2003 02:19 2003.1100.5426 311,864 Html32.cnv
27-Jun-2003 02:19 2003.1100.5426 116,288 Msconv97.dll
....End quote.....

START, Find, F/F, "Html32.cnv, Msconv97.dll".
(No quotes, yes commas). R-Clk, & select Properties.

I suppose you did get the update, if your files look like that. "START,
Find, F/F, 'Windows Update.log'". (Use double quotes around that name.)
Do you see an error message about Q823559? (Edit menu, Find, 823559)

What about this Registry key...?...
.......Start of Export of key.........
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{2806b4d1-cadf-4568-99df-1c8836a6b4bc}]
@="Windows 98 Q823559 Update"
"IsInstalled"=dword:00000001
"Locale"="EN"
"Version"="4.10.0.2222"

......End of Export of Registry key.......

To see it...
(a) "START, Run, Regedit"
(b) Click plus signs, beginning at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", & ending with
"Installed Components".
(c) Click "{2806b4d1-cadf-4568-99df-1c8836a6b4bc}" in the left pane.
(d) Look in right pane. What do you see?

And this one, which puts it into MSInfo32...?...
.......Start of Export of key ....................
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup\Upda
tes\W98.SE\UPDQ823559]
@="Windows 98 Q823559 Update"
"C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\Micros~1\\TextConv\\html3 2.cnv"="2003.1100.5426
..0"
"C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\Micros~1\\TextConv\\mscon v97.dll"="2003.1100.54
26.0"

......End of Export of Registry key .......

Finally, there is this Registry key, which puts it in Add/Remove...
.......Start of Export of key....................
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\
Q823559]
@=""
"DisplayName"="Windows 98 Q823559 Update"
"UninstallString"="RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
C:\\WINDOWS\\INF\\QFE\\W98.SE\\823559UN.INF"

......End of Export of Registry key.......

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
