Default CD won't read

I made a backup of some files on my other PC (Win XP) which has crashed.
The hard drive has been in the shop for a couple of weeks and I need to get
to some of those files.

I put the CD in my Win 98 SE machine and it doesn't register that it's even
there. I put it in the CD-W and it registers but it shows nothing.

What can I tweak to get this PC to read that CD?

I'll be forever grateful! :-)

Debbie

Test the CD in the PC that made it, to be
sure the CD (a) is generally OK, (b) has been
formatted to read in CD-ROM drives. (Some
CDR software lets you choose (b) or not.)

Can I test it in the PC that made it without a hard drive?

Yes. Use a floppy boot disk to boot to the command prompt.

Change to the CD drive and type DIR.

If you get a directory list, then we can discuss options.

The easiest one might be to remove the CDROM drive
from the XP machine and install it in the 98 machine.

OK, I got the PC without the hard drive to boot up. But I can't get to the
CD drive. I've forgotten a lot of DOS so can you tell me how to access the
CD drive?

Thanks,
Debbie

I remembered the command, but I am getting the Abort/Retry/Fail message.
When I press F 3 times, it states "Fail on INT 24".

I think I know what my problem is ... I don't have a WIN XP restore disk, so
I'm using my Win 98 restore disk. Could this be my problem?

If so, could someone send me a WIN XP restore disk?

debbieg at accessus dot net

I'm about ready to throw all 3 of my PCs in the trash!!!!!
