"..connected USB device had malfunctioned.."

My brother, (who had a new MSI Kt6v mobo a few weeks ago), 'phoned to say
that he plugged his little Olympus C150 into a USB port - XP Pro detected
it - several little balloons popped out from his system tray in quick
succession, (i guess xp was detecting and setting up a "mass storage device"
and assigning a drive letter to it etc.), and the last balloon said that the
attached device had malfunctioned.

I think he's tried all the obvious things, fresh batteries in camera -
camera still works and takes photos etc.
....I suppose he could buy a card reader but they're not cheap.

I suspect it's the KT600 chipset not happy with USB signal from camera
(powered by 2 AA's) ...and he uses rechargeables - so 2 x 1.2volts instead
of what you'd get from alkaline disposables ....

His old PC Chips / Elite...I think it was .....didn't give trouble.

Check cables, connectors, internal connections etc.
If you can't get the computer to read the camera maybe a read/write flash
card device is the way to go. I just bought one that fits in a 3.5 bay for
under $30 from Newegg. Make sure you get one that read xD cards.

Thanx Clark, I just checked my favourite online store, they've got a 13 way
reader, (external USB2.0), for 8.99, I thought they were all much more
expensive than that. Will try to pin it down on his PC first tho, when I
get around to it.

Some cameras have two settings for file transfer: point to point (PTP)
and normal (or something other than PTP) and if one mode fails, try the
other.
