Default URLMON.DLL error message

When I open Internet Explorer in Windows ME I get the following error
message.

"EXPLORER

Explorer has caused an error in URLMON.DLL. Explorer will now close"

If I close this error box Internet Explorer shuts down and the computer
reverts to the Desktop. However, if I move the error box to one corner of
the screen I can continue to use Internet Explorer as I would normally do.
Please note I have not made a mistake with this error message it really does
have the heading "Explorer" and not "internet Explorer" even though it is
the latter page that I have opened.

Please can anyone explain this strange behaviour and tell me what I can do
to put it right?

You could try this:

Go to Start/Run and type: regsvr32 urlmon.dll
Press enter. You should see a brief message that the dll has been
successfully
registered.

Then try to repair I.E: Go to - Start Programs Accessories System
Tools System Information
tool From Tools the menu choose IE Repair Tool Repair IE.
Alternatively you can try to uninstall IE and that should give you the
option to repair it too if I recall. You could also look he

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q293907/

"If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if
Internet Explorer 5 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control
Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a
command prompt. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box,
type the following command, and then click OK:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
NOTE: This command is case sensitive."

To Galen: Thanks for your reply. I tried the sequence Run regsvr32
urlmon.dll etc as you suggested, it ran and told me that it had operated
successfully. I was then able to use IE without that annoying message,
however, after I had shut-down and later re-booted the computer I received
the same error message unless I ran the sequence again. I shall try the
longer sequence later. I also looked-up the KB document and did some
investigations but our computer does not have a Tool for IE repair.

Well, let's see what we can do about you having to do it over and over
again. That's just not right now is it? Are you 100% certain that if you try
to uninstall IE it won't offer you the repair? You do have the latest
version of IE installed I hope. If not you can try going to the update site.
If you do than this site here might be of interest:

It's a bit of a read but it should cover everything that you might need to
know about reinstalling/repairing Internet Explorer. HOPEFULLY it works this
time. If it doesn't than we'll have to look into malware running on your
system that could be causing error which is unlikely but possible.

To Galen: Thank you for your reply and first class advice, I located
KB194177 and pasted the instruction for IE repair into the RUN box. I
then followed the prompts for IE repair and the program now seems to be
working.

Excellent, don't be afraid to post again with any question regarding your
operating system or computer. Somebody here will either know the answer or
be willing to find the answer for you in most cases. Some people claim that
Windows ME is not a good operating system and that it's impossible to run
effectively. I happen to enjoy the operating system quite a bit and have
found that it's a fine system if you take care of it. I've often left ME
boxes up and running for long periods of time just to prove that it can be
done.
