Main CPL error
Whenever I boot WIN 98SE, I receive error message "An error occurred while Windows
was working with the Control Panel file C:\Windsows\System\Main.cpl" I can click OK & all seems to work well- until I try to use the scanner (USB) when the error pops up again. After hitting OK about 8 times, the scanner comes up & works fine. I have extracted & copied the Main.cpl file from the CD (it's the same file & size that was on there, but thought I would try anyway) Searched the KB & found zilch! Any hints would be appreciated TIA Doug |

Main CPL error
Can you double-click the main.cpl file and does it execute properly (mouse
properties)? If so, you need to look at the command that is trying to access main.cpl during startup, and disable or fix it. It may be trying to execute a function within main.cpl that does not exist. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP W95/W98 "Doug Boufford" wrote in message ... If you get an error when you double-click main.cpl then perhaps the file is
corrupted. Try using SFC to extract a new copy of main.cpl again from the installation CD. See: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/using_sfc.html USING THE SYSTEM FILE CHECKER (SFC). Since the default action for main.cpl is mouse properties and that isn't working, try removing and re-installing the mouse drivers, or replace the mouse drivers with a generic version. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP W95/W98 "Doug Boufford" wrote in message ... Jeff Thanks for your help. I re-installed MAIN.CPL using SFC & still had the problem. I del the mouseware & that cured the problem. PS: having a "time" getting the mouse sw to re-install & be useful on an USB port - but that's another story. Have it working on a serial port for now...... Again, thanks for your assistance Doug |
