W98 does not have a restore point. If you are looking to restore a copy of
the registry, see the info he

How does that compare to restore points on XP? Will I still get to the same
place?

No.
It will only restore a previous copy of the Registry and the startup .ini files.

Restore points in XP restore your entire system to a previous state......files and
all.

XP restore points...you can select dates all the way back to first install
of the OS.
Win98SE through scanreg/restore goes back the last 5 boot entries.
To do this ... Start/Shut down/restart in Dos. At the curser type:
scanreg/restore
The entries marked "started" should work.
Also you can boot with a bootdisk and do the same thing.
To get back to OS/desktop in dos type restart at the curser and hit
enter.

Perhaps. The number of available Restore Points depends on the disk space
you've alloted to System Resto http://bertk.mvps.org/html/diskspace.html

System restore restores the system only, does nothng for any 3rd party
application faults, its a godsend for the OS only. Restore is functional
for system files and the registry/ini restoration only. Restore points are
only useful for the system and boot partition(s) in ME and XP. Does nothing
for any others except waste space. XP restore function can be disabled on
user selected specific partitions, ME is locked at all or nothing. ME will
create a _restore folder at all visible partitions whether enabled or not.

Your point being??
System Restore will enable a user to recover from an otherwise potentially
disastrous position.
It will NOT back up user data (or remove it) except under certain conditions
(and if those conditions apply, then the chances are that they will break
System Restore for the average user!)
SR was never designed as a backup tool - it's a 'Get out of jail free' card,
and nothing more.

Yes, I wasn't at all clear (except in my own mind) when I wrote "restore your entire
system to a previous state". By system I meant the system files, not any data files
or 3rd party program files.
