Default Font Limit In Win98se

Someone told me that if you get above about 500 fonts (TTF files) in win98se it could
cause problems. Is this true. What if a person has like 1100 or 1200 fonts?? Every
application seems to want to install its own fonts.

Thanks much.

That 500 is actually a rather high figure. Probably OK for most systems,
but... What happens if you get to many is weirdness involving fonts.
That simple. Wrong fonts are displayed, can't get fonts to load in some
programs, etc.

What you do if you want to install lots and lots of fonts is to use
Adobe Type Manager or Bitstream Font Navigator. Create a core group of
fonts that should always be fully installed to the FONTS folder, and
then other groups to add in as needed, removing them when not needed,
using the font manager of your choice. Your total fonts installed at any
one time shouldn't be more than 300 or so.

I'm not totally clear on whether the limit is similar in Windows XP, but
it seems to me that XP handles fonts much better. I manage to do fairly
well with over 4000 fonts installed using Bitstream Font Navigator (I
have Adobe ATM also, but I find Bitstream more easy to navigate.) And I
leave them installed most of the time. The trade-off for convenience is
that I get occasional weirdness involving fonts, and Adobe programs (in
particular) take a *looooonng* time to load--Adobe doesn't use the
Registry font list like other apps. It enumerates them all when loading
the app..

Thanks much for reply. Personaly I do no need a lot of font. Like in Word, Excel. ETC I
use Times New Roman I think it is 99.9% of the tim. The only fonts that get put on are
when I install programs to try them which I do a lot such as Hallmark Card Studio Deluxe
and then if I remove them they usually leave fonts behind thus building up the number of
fonts.

Thanks for reply.

There's lots that goes into this issue, since it's a Registry issue for
the most part, and Registry issues of this sort are notoriously prone to
"Your Mileage May Vary" results. I, too, have used 1500 or so fonts in
Win98, but it wasn't always pretty.
