Explorer - This program has performed an illegal operation.
Dear All,
The constant pop-up of Explorer - "This program has performed an illegal operation .........." keep appearinng regardless of whether I'm surfing the net or doing any job not only irrated me but also caused the computer to shut down and restart again half way in whatever job you are doing. Francis Chew had this to say: Dear All, The constant pop-up of Explorer - "This program has performed an illegal operation .........." keep appearinng regardless of whether I'm surfing the net or doing any job not only irrated me but also caused the computer to shut down and restart again half way in whatever job you are doing. There are so many possible reasons for errors such as these that I'm not able to give you a magical cure for this immediately and don't really feel too comfortable responding in the way that I am. First I suspect that you're the victim of malware. Here's an interesting Google search to get you started if you'd like: http://www.google.co.uk/search?num=1...peration&meta= While that is not the answer you're looking for I have added to this my most recent cut/paste of the typical response I've decided to give with malware related issues. I'm sorry for the canned response but there may be better posts below mine so feel free to read them all before making any changes to your system. Download AdAware personal edition from www.lavasoft.de Download Spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download Download Stinger from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ Install and update the the first two. Disable system restore for the time being. Reboot to safe mode by pounding on the F8 key during boot until something interesting happens and from the supplied menu pick safe mode without networking. Scan and delete any entry found. Reboot into regular mode. Scan again. Turn system restore back on. Any luck? That's where I'd start at any rate. Prevent this in the future. Install a personal firewall (software is what you're probably looking for and there's a number of free ones available.) Having a firewall is not enough. You must set it to it's highest settings and then learn to allow the applications, and only the applications, to connect at only the correct times and through the correct ports with the correct protocols. It sounds difficult but it isn't really. It's best to go ahead and install one, use it in it's "rule" mode for a while, and then after a couple of weeks it should be configured exactly the way you like it and will run smoothly in the background keeping your computer nice and safe. However, improperly configured firewalls lull you into a false sense of security and security is a process that YOU do. Security is not an application. It is awareness, understanding, and being attentive for signs of inappropriate activity. Practice safe computing. Feel free to increase the level of security for your internet connection. Some good ideas would be to set the downloading of ActiveX to prompt for signed, enabling running of ActiveX, enabling script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting, and setting the other two to disable or at least to prompt. I'd consider setting the ability to access data across domains to prompt, I would definately set the drag/copy/paste files to prompt, the launching of programs in IFRAME should also be set to prompt, as well as the installation of desktop items. Finally there's the option to allow paste operations via script, I'd set that to prompt to. Sites which you like and have come to trust which have features that you feel you need can later be added to the trusted zone. When you first start to add sites to the trusted zone you'll want to make sure you check the properties and select that all sites in the zone do not need to have the "HTTPS" (be secure servers.) There are a number of tools that you can use to manage and configure the different zones, a search engine will help you on your way as I tend to avoid recommending specific products if I'm able to avoid it. That's a step that you can take if you'd like. I could probably go on and on about this but I will send it out so you don't wait too long for an answer. I should also probably cut and paste this so that I don't need to type it all over again but I guess getting an individual response is a good thing. Galen -- "My mind rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation." -- Sherlock Holmes |

I see it is from McAfee and so I will pass on the product. I appreciate the
link but stear clear of McAfee products. I also stear clear of Symantec (Norton) products with the exception of GoBack which I have installed on the 98SE side of my computer since 98SE does not have a system restore. GoBack is actually superior to System Restore. I am willing to make this one sacrifice in terms of performance and a more gunked up registry in order to have the benefit(s) that GoBack provides. Dan had this to say: I see it is from McAfee and so I will pass on the product. I appreciate the link but stear clear of McAfee products. Generally agreed but THIS product tends to work quite well, have updated definitions for the latest baddies out there, and is a decent product for free that's easy to use in a pinch. Quite effective for the time being and well worth the effort to download and use just in case. While I too use a different AV product it is not free and they don't have a generic removal tool such as this or I would probably recommend it. Galen -- "My mind rebels at stagnation. Dear All, The constant pop-up of Explorer - "This program has performed an illegal operation .........." keep appearinng regardless of whether I'm surfing the net or doing any job not only irrated me but also caused the computer to shut down and restart again half way in whatever job you are doing. I have done a virus scan but detected no virus causing this problem. Please help how to stop or prevent it from popping up at all. Explorer This program has performed an illegal operations and will be shut down. EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0617:bff74347 It's always worth trying a repair of Internet Explorer (because IE & Windows Explorer are heavily intertwined). Start Control Panel Add/Remove Programs Select "Microsoft Internet Explorer" (Note : the wording varies depending on version. Make sure you *don't* choose an entry which starts with "Internet Explorer..." because these are usually fixes or patches) Click on 'Add/Remove', select 'Repair Internet Explorer' and 'OK' Reboot machine when prompted to do so.
