Default Web integration Adobe Acrobat

This question has been asked (and answered) before, but the answers always
seem to miss the point, so here goes.

I have Acrobat Reader 4 and 5 installed. Until about 1 week ago, web
integration of Acrobate Reader 4 would occur *provided* that AR4 was already
running. Then I started getting an error saying complaining about not
finding an external window handler. I have read Adobe's blurb on the
problem, and yes, I can use AR 4 as a helper app, but if I check the "Web
integration" box, I get a permissions error and a complaint about not
finding a Netscape plug-in (which I don't use), nd the box unchecks itself.
Adobe recommend uninstalling all the readers and reinstalling in a
particular order, and assume that everyone will have the old installer
files!

Surely all the information about which handler should be used is stored
somewhere in the registry, and the problem is really a matter of correcting
the wrong entries in the registry. But how? Anyone like to reveal the big
secret?

Here is the point. Since this is a Adobe problem and not a Win98 =
problem, I can only say you use find in the registry to see what you can =
come up with or check in the Adobe forums for an answer that helps.

I don't see where you have asked this question before in this NG. If you =
have, and it was under a different name, all I can say is that it would =
help to know what's been suggested thus far. This being more accurately =
an IE/Adobe question, the pertinent MS newsgroups would be those dealing =
with IE. There are also, I believe, Adobe forums, though how much =
assistance you will receive there I don't know.

I can't say for sure that there are still places from which to download =
AcroReader 4x or 5x (other than from notoriously dangerous file-sharing =
places), but your predicament is precisely why I *always* save =
everything I download. But in any case, Adobe Reader is notorious for =
*usually* not working well as an IE plug-in in the first place. The =
cognoscenti of the world know to download the file using "Save Target =
As", making sure "Close Dialogue Box when Download Complete" is =
UNchecked. Then open the file when download is finished.

What I would do in your position, assuming you really insist on having =
is to run IE Repair. Then reinstall AcroReader. Surely you can find a =
copy somewhere? The information you seek is bound up in a fairly =
complicated set of registry entries, not just one simple one. (Well, =
it's probably one change, the problem being to find that one change in a =
long list of possible entries.) Not having your precise system, it would =
be impossible for me to track it down, even if I were so inclined. Given =
my feeling about Adobe (and I have a *lot* of Adobe products)...Well, =
just take my word for it, me looking for answers for their systems isn't =
a very pretty sight. It scare small children in the neighborhood, and =
the dogs, too. Usually makes my wife mad, too, s.

Many thanks. I realise that it was not obviously a Win98 problem, except
that I'm running Win98. I posted it more because I do not have easy access
to posting on any of the adobe.acrobat groups. My ISP doesn't serve them for
some reason. I found the answers that I mentioned on google groups.

Thanks for (all) your help. I'll see if I can find an installer for Acrobat
Reader 4.0. The real advantage of it is that it reads most things and on my
real old machine the newer versions of AR take up a huge amount of space and
memory. (Mine is a 100 MHz 64 Mb!!)

Send me your email address, in case I find something for you. Looks like =
I'll be moving across town (a whole five blocks) sometime in the next =
few weeks, so it's time to sort out all my boxes of STUFF. Probably have =
umpteen copies of AcroReader 4.05 buried in there. Probably even have it =
here on my system, somewhere, but right now it's even messier than my =
boxes.

Try here- if 4.0 isn't available try the 4.05 - is about the same but =
better..
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html
It was at the bottom on this page last month:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acroba...chive.html#Win
I also find it better to right click the PDF and select "saveas" rather =
than opening in IE.
