Well, in case it's of use to anyone who can't get the hosts file read by
their system. My hosts file and no-ads.pac java DUN auto configuration
script are BOTH working, and unless I'm mistaken it was all down to my ISP's
proxy server / setting in my DUN connection requiring that IE6 | Security |
Local Intranet zone | "Include all sites that bypass the proxy server,"
check box needed to be cleared.

regards, Richard

I did get it down to one breath didn't I ! :-)

I was waiting for someone to leap in and help me get my hosts working, while
I was recently talking to myself on at least two threads somewhere.
....David Candy suggested I post my hosts file, and of course thanx to him
and others that tried to help and who I've been boring with this problem
but, it was SO time consuming and I had to read loads of stuff about
networking, which I don't need or want to know anything about ! Anyway I
charged off and had several more goes and a few pennies finally dropped into
place !

regards, Richard

God bless the child who can solve his own, they say. But I do miss Candy
enough to go count the number of his posts in my "Keepers"... It's 28!
Some of them are huge, but nothing like the monstrous...
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
I'm glad you didn't post that! It did install/work well on this Win98SE,
but I do not have the complication of... well, let me go check...

"START button, Programs, Accessories, Communications, Dial-up
Networking, R-Clk NetZero, Properties". Hmm, I can find nothing in it's
various tabs that mention Zones.

However, at "Internet Options, Security tab, highlight 'Local intranet',
Sites button", indeed all three items are checked, INCLUDING "Include
all sites that bypass the proxy server".

DUNs are not a thing I'd really like to mess with, though. I have left
that to NetZero, & not just because their lit says I must do so.

XP Home I am :-)

I kept going back to my 'hosts not working problem' and fiddled and tweaked, on and off for weeks. It simply was not being read or used by XP / IE6. I was very careful not to do anything daft regarding formatting and stuck to the original, as unzipped from
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm placed in the etc directory. I tried all manner of adjustments in my DUN settings excluding clearing the check box in IE6 security Intranet Zone for "Include all sites that bypass the proxy server." During testing over those weeks I did lots of rebooting, as I read somewhere that hosts is read by XP at bootup - I wonder if that really should have been IE6. I still suspect this is not correct.

Shortly after I'd discovered, (again), and done the
http://www.schooner.com/~loverso/no-ads/#howtouse thing - 4 steps to that:-
1.) download no-ads.pac and slap a path/filename to it, into IE Properties | Connections | Settings | Use Automatic Configuration script - Address slot.
2.) Edit no-ads.pac with Wordpad and change the line "var normal" to
var normal = "http://www-cache.freeserve.com:8080"; to match my ISP's proxy server / port no. setting. I initially opened no-ads.pac with notepad and it was a total jumble i.e. no-ads.pac has tabs in it used to indent the java script to make it easier to read, as botchers ....ooops! I mean "programmers" do, and whatever reads no-ads.pac is obviously designed to cope with that. I think the no-ads.pac file is in ANSI format !
3.) Clear the check box in IE6 security Intranet Zone for "Include all sites that bypass the proxy server."
4.) Add the http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=271361 registry key.

I did that, and tested, and no-ads.pac was working fine. i.e. the sometimes doubleclick / bluestreak / atdmt type banner ad. at the top of my ISP's http://www.wanadoo.co.uk homepage showed action cancelled BUT, when I slapped http://www.tangozebra.com into IE6's address bar, (an entry in hosts that would have been directed to 127.0.0.1 localhost , the page loaded in IE6 - indicating that the hosts file was being ignored.

Quite what happened next I'm not sure. I think I, yet again, unzipped the hosts file into XP's etc directory.

Anyway for the 15,732rd time I quit IE6 cleared cookies, tif, checked all again and this time tangozebra was blocked, obviously by hosts. So hosts is still working.

Since then, I fiddled with the uper/lower case of the filename hosts in etc. i.e. I clicked on it and hit F2 and overwrote it with hosts ,all lower case, and hit Enter, and the instant the filename was out of edit mode it appeared in Windows explorer's pane listing the files in etc., as HOSTS ...all upper case...and in a "dos" listing I notice !! e.g. and hosts is still working ! :-)

....so anyway it's all working but, what a blooming farce !

regards, Richard

I do not have http://www.tangozebra.com in...
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

The closest I do have is...
127.0.0.1 ad.uk.tangozebra.com
...., & I am loath to enter the other into an Address Bar. I am
double-loath to take in your attachments.

What did they say about all that at an XP newsgroup? Or have they all
perished of radiation? Anyhow, I think you are fine, now, that it is all
working.

I do know, for XP, the HOSTS file goes into...
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
....instead of into "C:\Windows". Also, that mvps.org does mention a few
other things. For instance, it says to be careful with AdAware, if you
are XP (I think).
