Dear all,
I have a couple of laptops running Win98SE. I put win 95
powertoys on and used tweakui to remove the annoying
little arrows on the shortcut desktop icons. All was fine
for a year. Recently, having just got ADSL I chose to
install the updates to win 98. Now tweakui does not work
and no matter what the arrows have returned. I re-
installed powertoys but still no luck. Any ideas?
Please reply to the NG and my mail address. Many thanks

As far as TweakUI not working, I presume you are referring to this failed
feature, and that the rest of TweakUI works as it should.

I believe you'll have to find yourself content with that inability to hide
the shortcut arrows. Reason: The Update you installed "fixed" that. I think
there was some security flaw that the fix addressed which tied into the way
the hide shortcut arrows within TweakUI operated. The lesser evil was to
have the security flaw patched, rather than to allow for the hide shortcut
arrows.

Now, it has been said by some, and I would tend to agree, that having the
shortcut arrows provides a distinct value to a user in knowing *exactly*
which items are the true executable and which are shortcuts.

As far as installing recommended updates, it is your machine, and you can do
as you like, but in many cases it may be viewed as unwise to wait so long to
install critical updates on ones machine; but it's your call. You'll have to
make your choice as to which is more important to you. g

Dear LS,
Thank you. The reason why the update installation was
delayed is two fold. One was my daughter at university had
the machine. The other is that until recently I was
limited to pedestrian dial up access and the length of
time to download the updates was clippling on the
telephone charges. Now I have fixed price and affordable
ADSL, that has changed.

Alex -

Under the circumstances you've cited, it *is* understandable about not
having a rigorous Update schedule. In this and so many other ways I'm sure
that you'll find your new DSL service to be of great value. As for the
remaining "suggestions" in my prior post, you're most welcome. s

Regards,
