AV software and PC in safe mode
Just found this newsgroup. It is great.
Trying to help friend with his computer. He did not have any AV or firewall software on his HP Pavilion running Win Me. Now, all sorts of errors. Can run in safe mode only. Had bought Norton Internet Security 2004 to install on his PC. Have seen posts re NAV not working well with Me. Have second thoughts now. What AV/firewall software do you suggest for Win Me system? Working in safe mode is new to me. Called AOL and got very foreign speaking person who did not answer my question. Can I run AOL in safe mode? It is V 7.0. AOL gives me invalid or busy port message so cannot download AV software or troubleshooting programs from web. Am using my PC with Win XP Home and Nort Int Sec Prof 2004 to send this e-mail. Can I somehow use this PC to get troubleshooting files to his PC if no AOL? Can I install an AV program while in safe mode? Seems CD drive on HP Pavilion does not work in safe mode. Is this correct? I can burn a CD with my system. Appreciate all advice. |

Before you go too far with installing more (AV, AOL, etc., etc.) software,
maybe you should sort out the Normal Mode issue first! CD ROM will not work in Safe Mode as you need the drivers installing - which only happens in Normal Mode. Just what errors are you seeing? - Please give exact error report messages. Mart "Jane" wrote in message ... Just found this newsgroup. It is great. Trying to help friend with his computer. AV software and PC in safe mode
Hello, Mart:
Thank you for responding to my question re AV and safe mode. I have been following the error resolution advice in posts re going to safe mode and running various troubleshooting methods to resolve issues. Suggestions were to run Striker, AV, Ad-Adaware, Spybot, etc. Ran into probs with AV and AOL. Thus, this post. I had asked questions about multiple errors in post on 6/27. I've copied it into this reply... In normal now, I believe I get an explorer error message almost immediately and I have to shut down. I will have to retest and will do another post with outcome. Unfortunately, don't have the time right now. Have searched everywhere for the Oltrga error and the OE error below. Can't find a thing about either one. Oltrga.exe is not on my Win XP Home PC. Seem to recall it's in Windows folder on problem PC. My friend's son lost the system recovery disks. HP no longer supplies replacements. System restore fails. ************************************************ 6/27 post Hello, Helping friend with his Win Me OS problems. Start to boot, but get error OE:017F:BFF8E648. Had to pull plug, would not shut down. Researched previous posts and MS errors but cannot find reference to this specific error and others. Booted in safe mode got error "Oltrga has caused an error in kernel32.dll. Oltrga will now close" System attempted to reboot, then got "CMDNINST caused a general protection fault in module GDI.EXE @ 0005:00002a77. Tried to do a system restore and received Rstrui has caused and error in GDI.EXE. Rstrui will now close. Explorer has caused an error in GDI.EXE and will now close. Found reference to GDI.EXE...maybe has to with Fonts folder in Windows? Can find no reference in any search regarding oltrga. System was unprotected. Any info is greatly appreciated about the above files, msgs as uncertain what they are. Thanks again. ***************************************** -----Original Message----- Before you go too far with installing more (AV, AOL, etc., etc.) software, maybe you should sort out the Normal Mode issue first! OK, let's try to take one item at a time.
Let's worry about Oltrga.exe first, then come back to the OE (or possibly 0E ?) errors. You might wish to confirm OE or 0E on the next post - either way, it's *probably* hardware related. I've done a search for Oltrga on the web and drawn a blank. Can you do a search on your machine for the Oltrga.exe file (in Safe Mode if necessary) and right-click on it to look for its Properties. See if you can find the copyright or company and other details are and see if you can determine what it belongs to - name of the folder it's in etc. and more importantly, just what it is supposed to do g We need to find out what it is and disable (and possibly remove) it before moving to the next error(s). AV software and PC in safe mode
Booted PC two times in normal. Lots of different errors.
But am focused... Oltrga error did not come up in normal boot first time. It did the second time. It also occurred immediately after desktop appeared in boot to safe mode. Did search on PC. Found 2 instances of oltrga: C:\windows\oltrga.exe and C:\windows\applog\oltrga.lgc. Looked in add/remove progs and couldn't see anything obvious. Properties didn't clue me in. Size is 376KB, created on 6/30/02, modified 5/24/02 (curious?). Properties for the .lgc file showed created on 6/1/02. Normal boot error occurred right after desktop loaded and a McAfee Active shield stating software has expired...renew. "Oltrga has caused an error in kernel32.dll. Oltrga will now close." Clicked on close. I then got another error message. "Oltrga" "An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click Ignore....." I clicked on close and got the OE error. Boot going into safe mode gave same error regarding kernel32.dll. Am still able to ctrl+alt+del to get to close program window and shut down machine. FYI, system restore fails. It was not brought back to state before restore ran and failed. Thank you. -----Original Message----- OK, let's try to take one item at a time. AV software and PC in safe mode
Jane, I'm more concerned than ever with 'oltrga.exe' at the moment.
When you look at its Properties, what (if any) details are shown under the 'Version' tab? A search for "oltrga" - or anything like it - on Google reveals nothing! Even the 'oltrga.lgc' file is a mystery. The .lgc suffix *could* be related to anything - possibly a log file. Are you able to open it with notepad (or wordpad) and read anything which might enlighten us? How big is the oltrga.lgc file? Mart "Jane" wrote in message ... Booted PC two times in normal. Mart,
The lgc file is the Applog (Windows\Applog folder) created by Taskmon for oltrga.exe indicating that it has run and is located on the C:\ drive. Defrag then uses this data when optimising the placement of files on the drive. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Mart wrote: Jane, I'm more concerned than ever with 'oltrga.exe' at the moment. Thanks Mike, you're quite right, I should have recognised/remembered that.
The little grey cells! g But this 'oltrga.exe' is an oddball and I just wonder whether it's the "cause" or the "effect" of the problem. Good or bad, it doesn't appear to be installed correctly. And that's before we start!! I can even see your 'standard' SR response being required quite soon too, so don't go away. BG Mart "Mike M" wrote in message ... Mart,
Like yourself I can find no reference elsewhere to otraga.exe and agree that this would appear to be malware of some sort. Unfortunately I can't remember how this thread started, what the problem was or what you have suggested so will now try and gracefully retire. :-) Cheers, -- Mike Mart wrote: Thanks Mike, you're quite right, I should have recognised/remembered that. AV software and PC in safe mode
Hi again, Have read Mike's and your posts. I would be
surprised if this system **didn't** have malware and all sorts of nasties on it. Teenage boys used this system... downloading "awesome stuff". This is my friend's PC and it has beenly badly neglected. I have cleaned up everything I could find in cookies, temp files, etc. Removed suspicious apps. Scanned disk and defraged. No errors in disk scan. The oltrga.exe is likely another bad app. Back to original questions. Have read Mike and Noel's posts re running Stinger, AV, Spybot, etc. but cannot connect to AOL with that PC to get these programs. Do have Norton Int. Security 2004 disks, but am afraid of installing it with Win Me because of negative posts. Would like to run these progs then see what errors are still around. Is this thinking sound? Would have to install AV in safe mode. Not familiar with safe mode. Can I install progs in safe mode? Can I connect to internet (via AOL 7.0) in safe mode? I know all drivers aren't loaded. Used floppy to run Stinger in safe mode, but not certain if CD drive is accessible in safe. New to newsgroups. Should I start fresh with a new top level post for my next post? This thread is pretty deep. Appreciate your help, Mart and Mike. -----Original Message----- Jane, I'm more concerned than ever with 'oltrga.exe' at the moment.
