Default Lost Clusters

Received msg when doing scandisk that there were 16,000
missing clusters in 2 bad sectors on my hard disk.
Replaced it, reformatted etc. Now I have double the
amount of missing clusters and still 2 bad sectors
showing on the defrag grid. What did I do wrong,or do I
have a problem with the ribbon cable to the drive? Thanks
for your help. ergil

The bad sectors are physical errors on the disk. The reformat procedure
will mark the sectors as bad the same as Scandisk did.

If you are getting additional lost clusters after reformatting and
re-installing this may indicate that the disk is failing. This is not
unusual after the first bad sectors start appearing. You should monitor the
disk closely and if you continue to get errors from Scandisk you will need
to consider replacing the disk. Hard disk drive diagnostics available from
the hard disk drive manufacturer's www site will give you a better idea of
the health of the disk drive, but I would recommend doing a comprehensive
backup soon.

if you "ghosted" your old drive to the new...you will also have recreated
an image of the bad clusters...
best to do either a clean install or use a file by file copy utility...
xcopy should work from the windows "dos box"

I don't think that is correct (at least not with normal use of Ghost --
it has so many options I can't be sure there isn't one to preserve bad
clusters g).

maybe i should have used the word "imaged"

some imaging software will also image the bad clusters

did not mean to specifically malign norton ghost of it does not do that

Hi,

Well have you tried reinstalling windows as yet, that can
solve many problems, whilst in the process make sure you
wipe your existing hard drive. If you would like further
assistance please don't hesitate to email me
), even if it's as simple
as 'step by step' instructions.
Good luck,

Paul
