Default Error prevents Error Checking Disk Utility from Checking for Errors

I am unable to run ScanDisk on my Win98 system. I keep
getting the error message "ScanDisk has restarted 10 times
because Windows or some other program has been writing to
this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable
ScanDisk to finish sooner. Do you want to continue
receiving this message?"

Lately my the hard drive light has been staying on for
extended periods of time, but other than OS routines that
might be running in the background, I don't know what
programs could be writing to my hard drive on a continuous
basis.

I followed the recommended step above and closed all
running programs except for ScanDisk and still got the
same message. Then I loaded MSCONFIG and unchecked as
many 'start' items as I could, rebooted, and then ran
ScanDisk again but got the same result.

At this point, I'm not sure what could be running in the
background that would keep halting ScanDisk utility from
running. I haven't changed anything about the
configuration of my system recently. I haven't made any
hardware or software changes. It's an older system. But
until maybe 3-4 weeks ago, I was running ScanDisk every
few days with no problem, so I'm a little perplexed and
thinking maybe I downloaded some strange kind of virus,
but that's just a guess.

I would be curious to know if anyone else has experienced
this problem before.

I'm not sure what my next step should be in trying to
troubleshoot this problem. Maybe reload Win98.

Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated.

Try running it in safe mode.

Have you changed anything just before this problem started e.g. added a
cable modem ?

Download and use these in order, make sure
you upgrade Lavasoft and do not use it to
remove duplicate files.
Get Laversoft
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
Get EasyCleaner
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm
Get GeoDisk
http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Software.htm
Hope this helps.

I have exactly the same problem.

I ScanDisk & Defrag every 7 to 10 days. Now ScanDisk cannot finish cuz
something is searching my HD in the background. It starts all the time
now after about 2 minutes of inactivity with the Win98SE chimes
(indicating program opening) then the HD clicking away.
Cntl-alt-del reveals no additional program is running. Have closed
everything except Explorer and Systray using End-It-All and it still
runs and interrupts ScanDisk, even with the ScanDisk warnings message
option turned off.

One time I got an error msg that "resources were dangerously low, do I
want to close 'MOSEARCH"
Checked using Cashman program, of 128MB RAM, there were 77 MB free.
What the hell is windows talking about "dangerously low" my butt !!
And what is MOSEARCH ? What does it do ? Do I really need it ?

Have scanned system using McAfee, Spyware Nuker, PC-PowerScan, MS
RegEdit, results = no improvement.
Also cannot identify the program that is searching-in-the-background.

Any help is welcome
Thanks,
Jim

You cannot see all running things in that list.

everything except Explorer and Systray using End-It-All and it still
runs and interrupts ScanDisk, even with the ScanDisk warnings message

That turns off the message but does not revent the eother tasks from
interrupting !!!!!!

Think that's the Office indexing program. I would totally uninstall it.

Checked using Cashman program, of 128MB RAM, there were 77 MB free.

Get rid of Cacheman.
Memory/RAM and resources are two entirely different animals.

I would get rid of McAfee - especially since you get low resouce messages

RegEdit, results = no improvement.
Also cannot identify the program that is searching-in-the-background.
