My drive is 80gb. I've used 30gb. Windows tells me I have 700mb free
Yep, that's right. I've added up every single file and
folder on this 80gb drive (effectively 74.5gb), and it comes to 28.9gb. I checked that total many times. And Windows (and Norton) tells me I've used 73.8gb and have only 721mb free. So Windows won't let me transfer any data to this drive--I get that window stating that it's full. I've been getting that message for weeks now. Furthermore, I tranfered about 14gb OUT of this drive today, and the free space didn't change! And yes, I rebooted, many times in fact. I recently defragged, cleaned up the system in many ways, but no improvement. This is crazy. I have spent hours on this, and can find no errors on my part. I'm in the delightfully unstable Windows 98-2e. Any suggestions? Thanks, Arthur |

Have you ran scandisk to check for lost clusters?

Do FDISK /Status at a DOS prompt. What are the partition details?
Are you running any Norton software, such as file protection and recovery? -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Arthur" wrote in message ... Yep, that's right. Yowza. I had not run scandisk--just used Norton's version,
which does fix allocation errors, cluster, etc--but I guess not nearly well enough, because I started to run scandisk, and about 1/3 way through, just for fun, I went to check disc space. Lo and behold, 45gb free. Guess that was it--did nothing else that could have affected the space. Thanks for the idea. So much for Norton (though the one-button checkup does catch a lot of other crap). --Arthur -----Original Message----- Have you ran scandisk to check for lost clusters? "Arthur" wrote in message ... Jeff, before I checked FDISK status, I ran scandisc as the
other fellow suggested. That seems to have fixed the problem, as system now reads 45gb free. Thanks anyway for the help. --Arthur PS I am running Norton System Works--does that include file protection and recovery? I do run the onebutton checkup regularly, with the abbreviated disc scan, and also manually run some of the other clean up features. -----Original Message----- Do FDISK /Status at a DOS prompt.
