Default Dual Core Processors

Intel Pentium D 820
Dual Core Processor
Clock Speed 2.8 GHz

I intend to buy a new computer with WindowsXP Home Edition.

I am bit confused about processor type.

Any advice would be highly appreciated particularly about dual core
processor?

For most folks dual-core processors are a fine investment that doesn't give
them any benefit in the real world. And in any case, Windows XP Home
doesn't support dual processors so you're tossing that money down a hole.
Get a 64-bit processor instead and you'll see performance gains whether you
install XP 32-bit or XP 64-bit.

For the moment you will get more bang for your buck buying AMD. Go for a
dual core AMD64 even if you are only for now installing 32 bit XP Home.

I've been running an AMD64 3200+ for a couple of years now and an AMD64 x2
4400+ for the last nine months. Both are installed in systems running
Gigabyte motherboards but there are several manufacturers worth looking
at. As it happens both have nVidia nForce chipsets, one nForce 3 250 and
the dual core on a motherboard with the nForce 4 chipset. Go for a PCI
Express system rather than one with AGP/PCI which is being phased out.

XP Home doesn't support dual processors on dual sockets but it does
support dual core processor on single socket, it will show up as 2
processors in Device Manager. XP Professional support Dual Cores on
Dual Sockets which effectively is 4 processors, more than any home user
is likely to need at the present time. For most part there is little
performance difference running 32 bit applications on XP x64. The 64
bit version of applications that have 64 bit versions, run significantly
faster on 64 bit than their 32 bit counter part. 32 bit applications
running on 32 bit operating systems will see no increased performance
running on processors with 64 bit instructions for the simple reason
that neither the operating system or the application can make use of 64
bit architecture. The Intel Pentium D 820 processor has EM64T Support,
it is 64 bit compatible.

The Dual Core Intel Pentium D 820 processor on an Intel board would be a
fine investment but I agree with Mike, I also am partial to AMD 64
processors for the time being. The AMD's deliver better performance
than their Intel counterparts. The difficult part of buying AMD
processors is to select a good board to match the processor, unlike
Intel AMD doesn't make boards so you have to do a bit more work in
selecting a good board. That being said, you wouldn't be disappointed
with your choice if it's supplied on a good board and it is ready for 64
bit Operating Systems. If you don't intend on using an older AGP Video
card get a board with the newer PCI Express Video Bus, AGP's are on the
way out.
