re-installing windows 98SE
Ron,
Thanks for the response. I tried your suggestion of restoring the windows registry prior to the problem. I have done so and I am still having the same problem. I get a message when I boot up that says windows can't find a dynamic link library named MSNP32.dll After answering okay, I get my login prompt. After logging in, I get the fatal explorer error and I am left with a blank screen and no processes running. Last week, I downloaded a Windows 98SE copy of the missing dll and placed it in C:\windows\system directory (it was missing from this location). But I still get the same message about it not being found when I boot up. I have not tried yet your other suggestion referenced in the url you listed. I am now reluctant after your comment about trying to restore Windows 98SE. I thought about upgrading to Windows XP, but decided that I should try to get 98 running first. I called Fugifilm regarding their software that I had installed, but they were no help. Appreciate any further advice that you can give me. -----Original Message----- I would try restoring a copy of the registry and see if that will get you in so you can uninstall the software. You also might try the technique in this article to get in: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;249191 If this problem is less than five days old, restore a copy of the registry that predates the onset of the problem and see if that helps. The five-day limit assumes that the computer is booted every day. If it is not booted every day, you may have an old enough registry backup that you can use even though more than five days have elapsed. Any registry changes made after the date of the restored registry will be lost. Ways of restoring the W98 registry include: On the Start Menu, select Shut Down and Restart in MSDOS Mode. At the Windows prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter. Boot to the boot menu by holding down either the ctrl or F8 key after the ram count occurs on the boot screen. Select Command Prompt Only and at the C: prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter. Boot with the W98 start up floppy disk--CDRom support doesn't matter. At the A: prompt, type: C: and hit enter. At the C: prompt, type: CD Windows\Command and hit enter. At the Command prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter. Once the registry restore screen appears, select the date of the registry that you wish to restore by highlighting it and then click enter. If you see a registry named: Rbbad.cab, that is a copy of the registry that has already been replaced. *********** If you install W98 over the top of the existing system, you should not lose any settings or programs. The down side is that this installation method rarely fixes problems and can cause others. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Dennis" wrote in message ... I have skillfully managed to install some camera software that has clobbered my Windows 98SE OS. I cannot even successfully operate in Safe Mode. My machine gets a fatal Explorer error and exits with no OS processes running. If I re-install Windows 98SE, do I need to worry about losing any user files? Or let me put it another way, When the OS is re-installed, will it automatically find my GBs of existing user files? Thanks for your reply. . |

re-installing windows 98SE
I think this was part of another thread.
Reading through it. I see you are at a point of impasse. If you have a 98 boot disk you may want to boot to that. Read the help files carefully. I am not great with Dos. But there are Dos commands listed in the help files of the boot disk that may help. It will explain how to load the windows execute or registry files and such. Installing XP would only work as a full install looking at the condition of your system right now. You would lose you wanted data. You could only do an 98SE to XP upgrade only if your 98 OS is in good condition. An upgrade like that would save your *user files*. -----Original Message----- Ron, Thanks for the response.
