Anti-virus for Win 98

I am unaware if plain 98 would have problems.

Hmmm, that's an idea. I think our son has high speed and my husband's
computer is a laptop (in a docking station) so it might be fairly easy to
try that approach.

Yes (or alternatively within the Programs Menu, there may be an option to do
it under the AVG group (wherever that is on your programs list), but it's
probably simpler just to find it in Add/Remove Programs).

If you do decide to uninstall it, it's always a good idea afterwards to then
reboot the computer to flush out any temp files, before installing the newer
version. (I'm assuming here that you downloaded the complete file, and not
just an "update file" for the older existing one)

I haven't updated mine either (still using 7.1) and with Window98SE. But
I'm guessing that the new version is still compatible with Win98SE unless
(on their site) it says it isn't. What was the EXACT problem or error
message??

Another idea you might want to try is to download the full AVG program to
a separate location on the hard drive and install it from there (rather
than
letting it be installed as an "update" version).

An even cleaner solution might be to uninstall AVG first, reboot, and

install the new version (the new complete version, not an update version
to an existing one).

No. You are entitled to updates for the program, and virus definitions for
one year from the installation date. After that, you can purchase, year by
year, a subscription to another years worth. You buy another subscription
year by year online. You will be alerted when the subscription date is near
expiration automatically. There's a registry entry for the subscription
expiration date. Uninstalling NAV does not remove this entry. Symantec now
uses a online account method for subscriptions and their expirations. No
longer uses the subscription expiration date in the registry for reference.

NAV 2004 was the first year that some of its assets could not be used in the
98/98SE/ME environment. The active memory scanner and file scanner still
function in that version though.

Why not switch to Avast!? Quite good, gets better ratings than AVG with
regard to detection, easy to use, and is free for personal use.

Hold off installing any Norton program
untill after you search this and other support forums for Norton problems
there are hundreds or thousands of problems
with all versions of NAV NSW and all versions of windows
Norton products are intrusive and oversized

(Actually, with my experience, I'll allow an exception for the Symantec
corporate enterprise version.)

Yep, that's what I use....Avast free edition....in both 98SE and XP. It
does need a reasonably fast system, more so than AVG, but it has a better
detection rate and many more updates.

You may notice a little slowdown with a system that old, particularly when it is
updating. I had it on a K6-2 333MHz with 128MB RAM and I think anything much slower
than that might show some lag. Let me know how it runs on that system, will you?
