Default I need help!

My mom recently had a tower given to her and when we turned it on to check it
out and to see what all is on it. Windows wouldn't load up. It shows the
windows 98 logo. And goes to the dos format. And tells you to choose from
some options where you hit a number and hit enter. For examole one option is
the command prompt. She didn't get any CD's or anything with it. So we have
no windows 98 CD to reinstall it. Our other computers have ME and Xp. Anyone
have any ideas what would cause this and how to fix it? The computer is a
Gateway essential 500. This is driving me crazy trying to figure it out.

If it was used computer, the *best* advice you can get is to wipe the computer of all data
and re-install an OS of your choice from scratch.

How do you do that? I've never done that before.

Take it to a local and reputable computer shop and have them do it.

Thanks. I was hoping it'd be something I could fix as money's tight for her
right now.

What happens when you select Normal and Safe mode booting?

Has your mom asked the people for the system and driver disks for the PC?
The previous owners should have no use for them.

It just shuts down or takes you back to the same place if I remember
correctly. I'm gonna have her see if the people still have them and the books
to it as she didn't get any books either.
