[Low-cost, low-complexity networking across dsl]
[Low-cost, low-complexity networking across dsl]
I'm not sure if this is the right group to help with this problem, so sorry if I'm off-target. I remotely help maintain my elderly dad's Windows 98 machine which is newly connected to internet via DSL. The problem: now that he accesses via DSL, ipconfig on his machine no longer returns an ip address that I can use to access his machine via pcanywhere. Other than getting a static ip address, is there low-cost, low-complexity networking solution which gets him assigned an ip address on my network? Otherwise, the best workaround I've been able to come up with is to have him dialup via regular phone line when I want to get into his machine? Any other ideas? steve rosen |

If it's a dynamic IP address, then it could change at any time. In that case, the solution is to sign him up for a dynamic DNS service, like http://www.dyndns.org , which will assign him an unchanging DNS name that can be automatically updated whenever his IP address changes. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. I'm sorry, but I don't answer questions addressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups.
