Default W98 se - Double clickinf most icons does not start programs?

Any icons in the control panel do not work? When I double
click them the hour glass comes up for a second then
nothing. Clicking the clock in the tray does not work.
Clicking download links in IE does not work, it does work
with Netscape.

Any suggestions would be GREAYLT appreciated!

Thanks,
Ken

HI Ken,

There may be a corrupt .cpl file. Go to Start - Find - Files and folders,
do a search on: *.cpl. and double click each one. If a window doesn't
open, replace that file using System File Checker (SFC).
All the compressed .cpl files are located on Win98 CD in the Win98_28.cab
file.
For Win98SE there located in the Win98_25.cab file.
Restore them to the C:\Windows\system folder.

Note that in Windows 98, the Desk.cpl file is named Deskw95.cpl in the
compressed
cabinet (.cab) file. The file must be renamed to Desk.cpl in the
Windows\System folder.
If you replace it, also replace deskcp16.dll

This can also be caused by a corrupt Control.exe file. It can also be
replaced
using SFC. Rename it and then extract a new copy from the Windows CD and
place it in the Windows folder.

To extract a specific system file:
To open System File Checker go to Start - Run and type SFC enter.
In System File Checker, click Extract one file from installation disk.
Enter the name of the file, and then click Start.
In Restore from, type the location of your Windows 98 installation media.
In Save file in, type the location where you want to put the file, and then
click OK.
