I have a copy of the original "Invasion of the Body
Snatchers". I think
I may have the Solaris also,, who starred [otherwise I
have to dig it out]?
Look it up on IMDB. It's a Russian film by on of the 10
greatest film directors ever. "Cast" does not matter...

Ah, you mean Solyaris

No, I mean SOLARIS. Based on a novel by one of the geniuses of
last century, Stanislaw Lem - although he hates the film
(although not nearly as much as he would hate the US remake had
he been unfortunate enough to see it, but he knew better), and
the novel is quite different. Lem rejected the "Writer of the
Year" award by "U.S. Sci-Fi Authors Assoc." (or whatever it's
called) because he considers /all/ American SciFi *garbage*.
[It, is after all, little more than "Seven Samurai with laser
guns and time travel, after all. Except "Seven Samurai" (better
known in the US in the guise of the Yul Brynner remake,
"Magnificent Seven") was a classic.]

Ah, I pulled "Solyaris" from IMDB, I had to determine what you were
discussing.

Agreed, Magnificent Seven is a classic. You always have to remember,
movie writers in the US MUST create movies that Americans will watch,
however ridiculous or lacking substance.

For instance: Reds - 1981 - Warren Beatty & Trevor Griffiths - tried to
address the early years of Socialism and idealism, using the Russian
Revolution as its background... and the resultant activities in the US.
HOURS long, most watching the *original* release left during the first
intermission or before [I saw it at a pre-release, and yeah sooo long it
needed an intermission at the indoor theater].. nice attempt but
*totally* misunderstood by most Americans, though 3 Oscars and other
awards were received.
I have NEVER found anyone [other than the one I was with] who saw the
*original release*... or liked the re-cut.

Anyway, don't get me started on film... To late, I know, but
let's drop it here in the interest of overall good vibes.

Huh? Think a fight is developing? Aww common, how can someone's like or
dislike of a movie, actor, writer, or otherwise, turn into a spitting
match....

But if you want, we can end this...

, don't think I saw that one,

It's not easily seen. Let alone his masterpiece, "Stalker".

I do
have the
American version taped.

You should burn it so no one else will accidentally see it. It
should have never been made.

I /did/ like Soylent Green even though it has that creep
Heston in it, because I love apocalyptic futurism.

Yet, no so futuristic now though, we seem to be close to
some of what
the "science fiction" writers were concerned about. Ah
well, we are but grains of sand rushing back and forth with
each crashing wave...

The end is near (relatively speaking). And not a moment too
soon, AFAIK.

I just checked - weird, it IS spelled both ways in G. links,
which I NEVER saw before... Well, Solyaris is wrong. It is a
Latin name I believe, and the book IS called Solaris, I have it,
and IIRC, there is no y in the Russian film title either.

Maybe people think adding the y in front of a makes it sound
more Russian. Sigh.

Well, that is true, and it is true in most other places more and
more, and there /have/ been some pretty great American films
made, but nonetheless, the overall balance, is not in favor of
Hollywood... The only place that has the greater percentage of
trash to quality HAS to be Bollywood, from what I've seen. AND
they make more movies per year than the US!

For instance: Reds - 1981 - Warren Beatty & Trevor

I've never seen it, but it may well have been not bad or better.
If people leave and it fails in the theaters, that's always a
sign of possible quality - or of trash beyond anyone's
imagination.

FWIW, I consider Lynch's 'Dune' to be his best film after the
first 2 seasons of "Twin Peaks" (coincidentally, it IS very much
an American Sci-Fi novel ;-)

I have NEVER found anyone [other than the one I was with]

Well, as I said I haven't seen it, but if only two people liked
it, it must have been halfway decent! Some of the BEST movies
ever made induce the average American audience to sleep or the
"sleepy stumble out of the theater".

Anyway, don't get me started on film... To late, I know,

Hey, I won't speak to people because they prefer Pepsi to Coke!
(I /am/ thanatoid...)

But if you want, we can end this...

Oh no, if you're OK with this, so am I... I have become more
tolerant - as long as you don't mind my rather strong (however
misguided) opinions, no problem.

Talk about OT though... ;-)

Yeah,,, I'm laughing hard... Bollywood produces a whole lot of {....},
but the Indians LOVE the stuff. They spend LARGE amounts of time pulling
the stuff of the web.... a TV show or movie is on the net dang near as
soon as its released, with them *glued* to the computer. Ah well, ... we
can thank [cough] them for soap operas... have you ever seen one of
those... hehehe, a VERY popular one has the camera zooming in and out,

But the Indians are extremely protective of their movies and TV shows,

And there lay the dilemma. I thought it was good, though overly long.
Yet even then, how *does* one cram something of that nature into a 1 3/4
hour movie, it would be impossible. Hence the cut(s) killed the value of
the movie as far as I was concerned. Leaving insufficient depth for key
elements necessary to appreciate the struggle, mental and physical, that
occurred during that important part of history.
