Default A Question

During boot up this shows up:

EMM386 not installed-unable to set page frame base address
Press any key to continue
EMM386 successfully installed
Expanded memory services unavilable
total upper 70kb
largest upper block 47kb
upper start address CD00 H
EMM386 active

The system will stop after that.

I have not been able to find a answer so thought I would
toss it out here to see if I can get some links or what
not thanks in advance for any help.

EMM386 is being installed by a command in the Config.sys file. Windows
98 does not require a Config.sys file or an Autoexec.bat file. I
suggest that you rename both of these files so that they will not be
executed. For example, change Config.sys to Config.syz and change
Autoexec.bat to Autoexec.baz.

This is just a guess. Boot with a floppy start up disk. At the A: prompt,
type: C: and hit enter. At the C: prompt, type: ren config.sys
config.old and hit enter. Reboot.

I think your config.sys contains an entry that is causing the problem.

Well...

(1) Hold CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu.
(2) Select to boot Safe Mode.
Config.sys & Autoexec.bat will not execute.
(3) Rename those two to...
Config.bad
Autoexec.bad
...They are both in C:\.
(4) Boot to Normal Mode, & post those .bad's.

I'm thinking...

DEVICE=C:\Windows\HIMEM.sys /V
DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.exe NOEMS V
DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO

....Those should be the first three lines in Config.sys.

(a) IF there is an EMM386.exe line in Config.sys,
it must be preceded with a HIMEM.sys line.
(b) IF there is no EMM386.exe line in there, then perhaps
you need one (for something that comes later).
