Default Win98SE and 1GB RAM = major problems for only me

I just upgraded an existing dual boot 98SE/2000 machine to 1GB RAM,
from having prior 512MB. Machine is a Barton 2600, Asus A7N8X-E
nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset. Video card is a GeForce4 MX 420.

I can no longer get 98SE to boot. I tried the ’vcache’,
’maxphyspage’, and ’ConservativeSwapfileUsage’ tricks. Also tried the
’msconfig’ limit RAM thing. None of these tricks work for me.

Depending on certain combinations of the above 3 tricks, sometimes it
will boot to a 640x480 screen and not allow me to change resolution.
Sometimes it will just boot to a messed up screen. Sometimes it will
boot to a blank desktop.

Are there any other things I might try? I’m wondering if it has
something to do with my configuration of hardware. Looking around the
Internet it seems everyone else is able to solve this problem. Thanks
for any help.

Try (temporarily) going back to 512 mb of RAM on the machine and see
if that works.

The ConservativeSwapfileUsage trick would be totally irrelevant to
this type of problem.

What values did you use for the MaxPhysPage and MaxFileCache entries
and where did you put them?

The MaxFileCache entry *must* go into the existing [vcache] section of
the system.ini file. Adding another [vcache] header could result in
your entry being ignored. The value entered should be either
MaxFileCache=524288 or MaxFileCache=512000 with 512000 being easier to
remember.

The MaxPhysPage entry *must* go into the existing [386enh] section of
the system.ini file. Putting it into the [vcache] section or into a
second [386enh] section could result in the entry being ignored. The
value entered should be MaxPhysPage=20000 which will limit Windows 98
to 512 mb of RAM.

(by way of explanation the value of 20000 is a hexadecimal (base 16)
number that is equal to a decimal value of 131,072. 131,072 memory
pages of 4,096 (4K) bytes each equals 512 mb.)

Good luck

Are you sure you are getting the lines into the right section of
System.ini? Here is how to do it in DOS...

1. Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95"
message, press the F8 key, and then choose Command Prompt Only from the
Startup menu.
For Windows 98, restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key
until the Startup menu appears, and then choose Command Prompt Only.

2. Type...
EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini
...., and then press ENTER.
4. Add the following line in the [386Enh] section of the file
MaxPhysPage=30000
5. Add the following line in the [vcache] section of the file
MaxFileCache=524288
6. Save the file, and then restart your computer.

But isnt it a known fact that win98 will squeal at too
much Ram? (definately will balk over 768.)
Sometimes I fail to see why people would want to push
win98's limits on this; and if the OP is a gamer, then prudence
suggests a more qualified OS for the purpose.
I have 512 on my dual boot 98/xp and it runs anything I
toss at it. (without getting ridiculous of course)

It doesn't work well if the settings aren't right. I use it with 768 MB
and it works fine and I have several friends who have a gig and it works
great.

The main reason to use this, is that 1 gig of RAM in Windows 98 gives
you 1 gig - 64 MB of RAM available for use in software, while in windows
XP, 1 gig of RAM gives you 512 MB of RAM for use in software.

So the diffirence in preformance is noticable.

I appreciate your response, but this isn’t working for me. I tried
various maxphyspage entries from 128 to 512 MB and just keep getting
the same problems. Like I said in the original post, sometimes I can
get to the desktop, but its 640x480 and I can’t change it. I’m
wondering if it has something to do with my drivers or video card.

There is a design flaw which allows Windows 95/98/Me to map an
excessively large amount of RAM for use as disk cache when there is
more than 512 mb of total RAM installed.

The total 4 gb memory address space available on 32 bit CPUs is
segmented for different purposes - Operating system, applications and
data, and the "System Arena". The System Arena has an address range
of 1 gb and addresses in this range are used by the disk cache, the
AGP video arpeture, and a number of other system functions. If the
disk cache ties up more than 512 mb of this address space then there
is not sufficient space left for the other items that need memory
addresses within the System Arena segment; resulting in "out of
memory" type errors or system crashes.

The MaxFileCache=512000 entry in the [vache] section of the system.ini
file solves this problem by preventing the disk cache from becoming
excessively large. With this limit in place Windows 9x system can
almost always be used with up to 1 gb of RAM and very often with as
much as 1.5 gb.

Many people are dual booting Windows 9x (usually 98SE) and Windows XP
on systems with large amounts of RAM for Windows XP, and it does
happen that Windows 9x will not run even with the MaxFileCache limit
in place. In those situations it is also necessary to limit the
total amount of RAM that Windows 9x can even attempt to use by placing
a MaxPhysPage entry in the [386enh] section of the system.ini file

Probably, I would stop at 512 MB which already is obscene for memory in
Win98, JUST to keep strange statements out of my System.ini. I would
always have to remember to put them back in there, in the event of a
crisis that wipes System.ini.

HOWEVER, as Jure Sah said, some Win98 are fat & happy, & XP is a
glutton. Note iso_dsl is dual booting with Win2000. I don't know whether
Win2000 is a glutton too!

| | | I just upgraded an existing dual boot 98SE/2000 machine to 1GB
RAM,
| | | from having prior 512MB. Machine is a Barton 2600, Asus A7N8X-E
| | | nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset. Video card is a GeForce4 MX 420.
| | |
| | | I can no longer get 98SE to boot. I tried the 'vcache',
| | | 'maxphyspage', and 'ConservativeSwapfileUsage' tricks. Also
tried
| the
| | | 'msconfig' limit RAM thing. None of these tricks work for me.
| | |
| | | Depending on certain combinations of the above 3 tricks,
sometimes
| it
| | | will boot to a 640x480 screen and not allow me to change
resolution.
| | | Sometimes it will just boot to a messed up screen. Sometimes it
| will
| | | boot to a blank desktop.
| | |
| | | Are there any other things I might try? I'm wondering if it has
| | | something to do with my configuration of hardware. Looking
around
| the
| | | Internet it seems everyone else is able to solve this problem.
| Thanks
| | | for any help.

That is the usual fix. Perhaps post those two sections of System.ini to
us from the Win2000. Did you look in MSInfo32 when the Win98 did boot?
How much RAM did it say it had?

| | Are you sure you are getting the lines into the right
| section of
| | System.ini? Here is how to do it in DOS...
| |
| | 1. Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows
| 95"
| | message, press the F8 key, and then choose Command Prompt
| Only from
| the
| | Startup menu.
| | For Windows 98, restart your computer, press and hold down
| the CTRL
| key
| | until the Startup menu appears, and then choose Command
| Prompt Only.
| |
| | 2. Type...
| | EDIT C:WindowsSystem.ini
| | ..., and then press ENTER.
| | 4. Add the following line in the [386Enh] section of the
| file
| | MaxPhysPage=30000
| | 5. Add the following line in the [vcache] section of the
| file
| | MaxFileCache=524288
| | 6. Save the file, and then restart your computer.
