wsaegetproviderpathfailed error message
Hello,
I am receiving the following error message in Windows 98: "WSCGETPROVIDERPATHFAILED, RETURNING WSAEPROVIDERPATHINIT" This error message originally started occuring when I attempted to upgrade Win 98 to Win 98 SE. The upgrade was never successful and I uninstalled any upgrade files as a result of this which seemed to take care of this problem. However, I recently tried to install DSL service on this machine which was successful in connecting, but brought this error message back and will not allow me to open any web browsers or email programs. Has anyone encountered this message before? If so, what is the source of this error and how can it be fixed? Thank you in advance. |

Geez, it looks like you may have messed up your operating system by having
old 98 F.E. and new 98SE files. Any way to revert to old 98 F.E.? Did you save the back-up that would allow to revert when you installed the new operating system or have you done too much to go back? Actually, the computer is my uncle's and he is the one who
originally tried to do the upgrade to Win 98 SE. That being the case, I would have to assume that he did not do a back-up of any kind. He did tell me however that after he uninstalled the Win 98 SE upgrade the error message did not come back. I brought the message back after trying to install a Verizon DSL line for him. The DSL service connected fine, but any attempts to open an internet browser result in that message. Uninstalling the Verizon service did not help, and their tech support did not have any valuable input. -----Original Message----- Geez, it looks like you may have messed up your operating system by having old 98 F.E. and new 98SE files. Google search.
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...3DN%26tab%3Dwg -- Quoted from the article. Hi, I found some mention of the error in association with winsock.dll, and it seems to indicate that the wrong version of the file is on the system. Is there an active network connection on this system during the upgrade? If so, I would try disconnecting and physically shutting it off. As to the missing mail, no that generally does not happen when changing IE/OE versions. Start/find/files and search for *.dbx. If you can locate the old mail stores, you should be able to import them into the OE4 (which uses *.mbx). -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers aka "Nutcase" MS-MVP - Windows Unquote. Run SFC.EXE from the Start/Run applet and extract winsock.dll from your Windows 98 CD. Reboot. Does it help? If not create a New Dial Up Connection. Get help from your ISP for all the necessary settings. Henri Leboeuf Web page: http://www.colba.net/~hlebo49/index.htm === "Eric" wrote in message ...
