Problems with IExplorer Update 6.0 Installation
OS: Windows ME
I have tried to install the IE update 6.0.1 - twice. I presently have IE 5.5. Downloading the update from online and in following the steps provided by MS, my computer does not allow the installation of IE 6.0.1. Also, now, each time I boot my computer, a window opens on the desktop that reads: "Problem with Shortcut: The shortcut resume Windows Update Installation.ink refers to a location that is unavailable. The location could be on a hard drive on this computer, on a network, or on a different computer on your home network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connceted to the internet or home network, and then try again." I tried to remove this notification thru the Start Up Config utility (2 WUinstallation.ink are present, one of which remains unchecked, the other re-inserts itself even after being unchecked and the computer re-booted). I am not on a home network and did not use a disk for installation. Is it best to stay with the IE 5.5? I have had no problems with accessing sites on the internet as of yet. I was concerned with security patches and staying current when i attempted to update the broswer. Now I see IE7 is available...what do you suggest? My plans are to upgrade to MS new OS in a year or so... Thank you in advance for your assistance in these matters. -- best, jana |

This sounds familiar! Did you reinstall ME over itself after having previously installed IE6?? If so, then a solution is at hand - if not, then read on.... quote This may solve your problem and will hurt nothing if it doesn't (but I trust it will): Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View: - Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK Create a folder named "Old uninstall". Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information. Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files. Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files. You will now be able to install all the troublesome components. If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder and the files you moved. Hello, Noel.
I saw this solution thread (from Zee) when I was searching for an answer, but did not want to try my previous famous method of "cover eyes - push many buttons." I'll try it and get back to the newsgroup with the results. -- best, jana "Noel Paton" wrote: Jana This sounds familiar! Did you reinstall ME over itself after having previously installed IE6?? OS: MS ME
Hello, Noel & friends: Nope. It did not work, the window "Problem with Shortcut" still opens on my Desktop at startup. Maybe I need to reboot a few more times and make sure it is completely removed from my recycle bin - - giving the cmputer a moment or two to reset itself. Funny, I did not reinstall ME at any point. My OS of ME was factory installed by the manufacturer of the computer(Dell). Any other suggestions - or should we leave well enough alone? thanks -- best, jana "jana" wrote: Hello, Noel. Problems with IExplorer Update 6.0 Installation
Ah, it's a Dell!
At this point, I suspect that the only real option is going to be to reinstall IE from scratch - but before we resort to that, please email me a MHT save of a Belarc Advisor report of your system. I'll take a look and advise further (do NOT post it here - it will contain some confidential details!) www.belarc.com -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "jana" wrote in message ...
