Default Opening IE6 takes at least a minute to open up and the CPU is at 100% for the entire time it is taking to open up.

I rebooted and my CPU useage was well below 25%. I then started up my AdAware
program to get an update, and it said there were no updateable components
(because I had been there a couple of days ago). I didn't do an AdAware Scan
this time and closed out of the program. My CPU useage went down from 100% to
about 66% and stayed there. If I move the mouse, the CPU will take a large jump
upwards; but the baseline CPU is at 66% without anything but System Monitor
open...and I haven't even opened IE6 on this boot, but I opened OE6 to write
this message.

I changed my MaxFileCache from 98125 (or some number like that) to 384000 (I
have 384MB of RAM). Hopefully the machine will work better.

What post are you responding to? What is it's date? You seem to have a free-floating "", Cymbal Man Freq.!

Try Wintop to see which app is hogging CPU time. It will show more tasks than you may think are running...

(1) WinTop will show as many tasks running as "START, Run, MSInfo32,
Software Environment, Running Tasks", which is twice as many as
Ctrl-Alt-Del. Microsoft's WinTop works in Win98, though written for
Win95. It shows individual CPU & RAM usage figures & updates it's
display every 2 seconds. Get WinTop from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d.../w95kerneltoy/
Download it into a folder of it's own. It's a single executable called
"W95KRNLTOYS.EXE". When you click it, it will unzip and reveal many
applications. All of them are a danger to Win98, except WinTop; delete
them. You will be left with:

W95KRNLTOYS.EXE
WINTOP.INF
WINTOP.TXT
WINTOP.VXD
WINTOP.EXE

You R-Clk WINTOP.INF & select "Install". Click OK to the requestor
stating that a disk is required. Another requestor will appear & allow
you to locate the folder that has the files listed above. WinTop.exe
will be copied to C:\Windows. You may go there, R-Clk it, point to "Send
To" & create a shortcut on the Desktop. Click it to execute. Otherwise,
"START, Run, WinTop".

(2) Do you have "System Monitor" in START... System Tools? If not, get
it from "START, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows
Setup tab, D-Clk System Tools, check System Monitor, OK, Apply, OK". May
as well take "Resource Meter", too. Now, go through the menus and at
least have it display

(a) Swap file in use.
(b) Swap file size.
(c) Swappable memory.
(d) Unused physical memory.
(e) Allocated memory.
(f) Disk cache size.
(g) Locked memory
(h) Other memory
(i) Kernel Processor Usage
(j) Kernel Threads

Still no improvement opening new IE6 browser windows. It takes over 2 minutes
for a clicked link in a newsgroup to open a new IE6 window of the destination
page.

Thanks. I have WinTop running and it says explorer.exe is running at over 90%
most of the time with at least 10 threads.

Just sitting there, or are you using it? Mine is showing JUST .27% with 17 threads, even after I actually open an instance of it! I'm sure that will increase hugely should I copy a folder or something.

What do you have to check for viruses/spyware? Have you seen Brian A.'s 7-yr. plan for virus/spyware detection...?...

.........Quote.............
....snip...
On top of hardware testing, you should also run a full system virus scan with a fully updated virus app, then check for any spyware/adware.
**It is very important to run the update for each program before running the app/s to be sure you have the latest definitions.**
Run the programs in Safe Mode after assuring you have shut down all running tasks except explorer or systray and all apps are fully up to date.
Remove your Temp Internet files: Right click IE. Under the General tab click Delete Files, put a check in Delete all Offline..., click OK and close when finished.
Delete all files in c:\windows\temp.

Download/run Cool Web Shredder from:
http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html

For Info on Cool Web Search variants:

Download/install/run Ad-Aware SE to detect/rid of any other parasites/spyware that may be installed. It can be obtained free from:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
After installing Ad-Aware, open it and click on the ref update to get the latest up-to-date ref file, then run Ad-Aware and delete everything it finds.

Download/install/run Spybot - Search & Destroy:
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?l...&page=download
Run it at it's default settings until you learn an know more about it. Spybot S&D is more of an advanced users tool and changing from the default settings can be dangerous to the novice user. Items found in the default settings that are RED can usually be safely removed. If you are unsure of a found item, do not remove it and ask for help.

If you still have problems, download/run HijackThis from:
http://www.richardthelionhearted.com...downloads.html
http://majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Copy HJT to it's own folder, this is where the log files will be saved. Run HJT in Normal Mode.
Do not remove anything with it until you get advice on what to remove, HJThis will list many apps that are needed along with the bad ones. Removing items listed hap-hazardly without knowing what they are can/will create a royal mess. Read the quick start here on how to create a log file that can be copied/pasted into a forum that can provide assistance on removal of unwanted pests.
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/#quick

Then post the logs to an appropriate forum where they specialize in spyware/hijacker removal. Please read any sticky notes for proper posting which are most commonly posted first at the top in each specific forum. Read any information under each forum category name for information on what that particular one is used for, look for the proper one that you post logs to.

It's also a good idea to have a HOSTS file to block bad sites, scroll to HOSTS File Manager he

I uninstalled that Java 1.5 Update 6 (which I put in, in the past week) and
explorer.exe seems to have settled back to normal.

It still could be good to check for viruses, but good going. Glad to hear it. What remains of Java in Add/Remove Programs? Have you seen Glee's postings on that...

........Quote............
Also look in Add\Remove Programs, as there may be more than one version of Sun Java installed. Older versions may be listed under "Sun" or "Java", and newer versions will be listed as "J2SE Runtime Environment". Post back with what you find.

The oldest Java won't uninstall. There were two others that have been
uninstalled, and I tried to reinstall Update 6 after uninstalling those two, but
I still wind up with explorer.exe issues again, so I reuninstalled Update 6 so
explorer.exe doesn't lock up.

The oldest Java won't uninstall from Add/Remove Programs
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v.1.4.0_01
When I try to uninstall it I get an error mesage:
Unhandled Exception
Error Number: 0x80040703
Description: Failed to find dll function:
ActPanel.IsJava2Netscape6Default
Setup will now terminate

I have Netscape 4.5 & 7.2, but I very rarely use them.
Netscape 6 was uninstalled a long time ago because it was not a worthy browser
on my machine.

No virus found on latest virus scan.

Default Opening IE6 takes at least a minute to open up and the CPU is at 100% for the entire time it is taking to open up.

The uninstall error you get is a bug in the uninstaller for that version of Sun
Java. You must manually uninstall it.

(from: http://java.sun.com/products/archive...l-windows.html)

quote
When attempting to uninstall J2SE 1.4.0_01, if you see a message like the following:

Unhandled Exception error of 0x80040703, and description of: Failed to find
dll function:ActPanel.IsJava2Netscape6Default.
You may need to manually uninstall the J2RE 1.4.0_01. To do so, follow these steps:

Go to Control Panel; select Java Plug-in. Click on the Browsers tab. Uncheck both IE
and Netscape6.

Remove the directory in which you placed the J2RE. For example, remove C:\Program
Files\Java\j2re1.4.0_01.

Remove the following files from the Microsoft Windows system directory:

plugincpl140_01.cpl
java.exe
javaw.exe

The default Windows system directory is as listed below. (It could have been set to
a different directory when Windows was installed.)

On Microsoft Windows XP, the Windows system directory is:
C:\windows\system32 or C:\WINNT\system32

On Microsoft Windows NT and 2000:
C:\WINNT\system32

On Microsoft Windows 98 and ME:
C:\windows\system

Remove the following Registry Keys: (The second key path shown here should be on one
line but runs to a second line because of its length.)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/Javasoft/Java Runtime Environment/1.4.0_01
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/uninstall/
{7CF31609-270B-11D6-9445-000102308676}

Do this by going to Start - Run and execute "regedit". Go to each key shown above
and delete it. The second key should have the "DisplayName" of "Java 2 Runtime
Environment, SE v.1.4.0_01".
